How to program your garage door opener to your vehicle.

78

By Sweeps Luck

Now that you have your shiney new car..you want to program your garage door opener to your car. Sounds easy enough. So, you get out your remote control to your garage door opener and, then get your owners manual to your new car. You need to follow the instructions from the manufacturer to be able to program the remote control to the car.

Ok, you have followed the instructions from the car manufacturer and you press the button for the garage door to go up.......and nothing happens. So, then you think you have missed a step on the programing. Well, what most instruction manuals leave out is the step from programing the car/truck/van to the garage door machine itself. On the back side of your garage door opener is a panel called the logic board. The logic board is the computer or brain of the machine. Most new garage door openers now are a mulit-code machine. By that, i mean it uses several signals each time you press the button on your remote control. This is for security, so your code can't be stolen by a code-grabber.

Now, comes the step of programing the vehicle to your garage door opener. Once you have followed the instructions of programing your vehicle, you now have to "teach" the car to the garage door opener. You will need some help doing this. You will have to get someone to press the button in your vehicle and hold it down, while someone else has to press the learn button on the back your your garage door opener mounted on the ceiling. The learn button on the back of your machine will be square if using a liftmaster machine. Craftsman, Liftmaster, Chamberlain are all the same. Their learn buttons are square, and usually are yellow, red/orange, or purple. If using a Genie, it has a button that says "learn button".

The person pushing the button on the machine will only have to push and release the learn button. DO NOT hold this button down. If you do, it erases all of the programing in the machine, and you have to re-program all the remote controls that you have. You will have to read my other hub to find out how to do that. You will probably say a few words you shouldn't either. :-) Programing the vehicle to the machine only takes a second, and when the machine accepts the code, the light bulb on the machine should flash for a brief moment, and you should hear audible click. Yep, it's that easy! I dont know why the auto makers leave that step out. Anyway, i hope this helps, and if you have any questions.. leave them in my comments and i will try to walk you through it. See the photo above and you will see the typical logic board...the square red/orange learn button is easy to see. Just remember to press and release.

Remember: It's good luck to shake hands with a Chimney Sweep!

Thanks for the information. Instructions can be confusing sometimes. You have to wonder sometimes who writes these "how to" manuals that come with vehicles.

Gregg 3 years ago

Thank goodness for Google! You're exactly right with our car owners manuals leave out instructions to open the garage door.

Thanks a bunch!

It sounds like you have reached the limit of remotes that your machine will hold. What it does after reaching its limit, is drop the last one that was programmed. A liftmaster/Craftsman machine can only contain 5 remote controls...or, 4 remote controld, and one keyless entry. Try erasing the machine..hold down the learn button for about 15 seconds, and try to re-program the 5 remotes. Hope this helps..if not give me a shout!....Joe

Sweeps Luck Hub Author 2 years ago

Tony most car owners manuals leave out one MAJOR step. After you teach your remote controls to your car, you must then teach the car to the opener. Have someone hold down the button in the car that you programmed your remotes to, and then then go to the back of the opener, and press and release the smart button. The smart button is the square or round button locate on the back of the machine where all of the wires are coming in. The lightbulb on the opener wil flash on and then turn off when the remote has been programmed. You will also hear a click when this happens. Hope this helps...Joe

This is great information. I have a question: in your hub about how to reprogram your garage remote you mentioned the security issue of leaving your opener in your vehicle when taking it in for service. If I program my opener to my vehicle, what security measures can I take when my vehicle goes in for service?

Sweeps Luck profile image

Sweeps Luck Hub Author 2 years ago

If you program your remote control to your vehicle, they wont be able to get into your garage unless they steal your car. That part of the hub is talking about the remotes that can be taken from your sunvisor. Glad you liked the hub.

I don't have a remote but only a keypad outside the garage door. I can't remember how I programmed my former car and just bought a new car. Can I program the car from the keypad or from the unit in the garage that opens and closes the garage door?

Hi Sue..i have never tried using a keypad as a remote. It may work tho..Program the keyad to the car by following the cars manufacturers instructions, then once the car has accepted the program, press and relase the learn button on the back of the garage door opener, then press and hold down the button that u programed in the car. Let me know if it works..i am curious now lol....JOe

How close does the vehicle have to be in order to be programmed.I have a 99' gmc sierra and my garage opener is a Liftmaster .I have tried to program but will not work.Even after i read your instructions. When pressing the button in my car,I then had another person press the learn button.Still holding down the button in the car,it does nothing but flash in the car but not my garage door opener,it just flashes for awhile then stops flashing.Does not work...please help

Sweeps Luck profile image

Sweeps Luck Hub Author 2 years ago

Hi Sha..You first have to program the remote control to your vehicle, then once the remote has been accepted to the vehicle, have someone press and release the learn button while holding down the button on the vehicle. It doesnt really matter how close the vehicle is to the door as long aas the remote will work the opener from the vehicle. If you have the vehicle parked in front of the garage door it should work..let me know if u have more problems..Joe

We all so have two different vehicle. The problem is I program one & the other one quits working. Any ideas.

Sweeps Luck profile image

Sweeps Luck Hub Author 2 years ago

Hi Linda..you need to clear your board and re program your remotes. What is happening is your program board is full and it is dropping your remote. Your board will only hold 5 remotes total..so if you try to program it 6 times.it will take the last one programed but will erase the next to the last. Hold the smart button down for about 20 seconds, and then program the remotes again..just dont go over 5 times or you will have to erase and start over..let me know if u still have problems...Joe

Your website was the only thing that worked!! Many thanks... We bought a new (used car) and in trying to set up the garage door opener from the inside of the car I knocked out my other car plus my three hand held remotes and never did get the new car set up. After reading our Hub I realized I had inadvertantly erased all by holding the smart button more then 20 seconds. Then since we purchased the home used don't know how many other remotes there originally were which may have exceeded the max allowable of 5 plus one keyless. Although I still don't under the differnce. Regardless I read the manual in the book and it gave two options but never stated you had to actually do both. Meaning program the remote in the car with the hand held original remote and then hit the smart button. I was trying either on it's own but didn't combine the two until I read your Hub. I was hesitant to try because of knocking everything else out several times, but I gave it a shot.. And to my pleasant surprise combining both worked... Thanks much appreciated.

I have an older Stanley garage door opener that does not have a learn button. How do I sync my new 2010 car to this opener. I had no problems with my 2007 car.

Sweeps Luck profile image

Sweeps Luck Hub Author 24 months ago

You will have to follow the cars manufacturers instructions to program the remote to the car. If it worked on the 2007 it should on the 2010. They can be a pain to program to the car sometimes.

Greg 24 months ago

How can I program my keyless remote for my car to open my garage door. would it be the same.

Sweeps Luck profile image

Sweeps Luck Hub Author 24 months ago

Hi Greg...you should be able to do it...follow the instructions for your vehicle..then when it says to take the remote control and hold down the button until the car accepts it. Of ocurse, you will have to take the keyless off of the door jamb and take it into the vehicle with you. Using a remote is a lot easier.

Hello,

We have a craftsman 1/2 HP garage door opener purchased in 1999. We recently bought a 2010 Volvo XC90 and are trying to program the door opener to the new vehicle yet it does not pick up the signal. When we press the #1 Homelink button on the Volvo it blinks. We keep it pressed and my husband goes to the door opener and presses the learn button once but nothing happens.....no click ...nothing...please help....thanks

Sweeps Luck profile image

Sweeps Luck Hub Author 21 months ago

Raul. it sounds either the remote signal was not learned by the car, or, the opener has reached its limit of remotes that can trained to it. The Homelink can be a pain sometimes and will take several tries to get the machine to accept it. I usually have problems trying to program a Mercedes. Try teaching the car again and erase the memory board to start over. Let me know if you have problems. joe

Hi, I have a Craftsman remote (for my garage) but my friend has a Chamberlain opener. Can I "teach" her car for my remote and then operate her chamberlain from that? The problem is that she moved into a new place and doesnt have the remote. We would rather not pay 22 bucks for a remote when she intends to use the button on her car.

John...i would need to know what remote you have,, and the color of the learn button on your machine. Look on the remote and see what it says..like LM971 or such. Joe

The remote is a Sears dated 09/07 and the number is TX2028. I am pretty sure her learn button on the Chamberlain is Red but I'll have to check tomorrow. I know from the remotes on sale that they seem to separate them from prior to 2005 and after 2005 I would guess that her place was built prior to 2005 but don't know for sure.

Mac 19 months ago

If you want to reset your garage door opener, all you have to do is unplug it for a few minutes. Because of this, some of the new high end openers now come with a battery backup. It has to be disconnected to reset the machine's codes.

There is an urban myth that if you try to sync up too many times in a row that the opener's computer will release all the saved codes. That is false information. It clears it's memory after a prolonged power outage or just unplugging it for 5-10 minutes.

The bad news is that while almost every car remote is made by the same company, the instructions from car manuals could not be more different or confusing.

Also, noticed that some of the buttons are better for certain functions like opening Gates, while others are better for garage door openers. Some manuals don't mention that.

A typical 3 button setup uses the 1 or 3 button for a neighborhood hood gate opener. The middle button (2) is usually set for the garage door. Then the last unused button can be reserved for a friend's garage door.

You still have to make the garage door machine "learn" your open code, however, which gives you 30 second from the time you press that red button, to get back to your car and hit press you remote button. Get a friend to help you.

I work at a car dealership. I've been trying to program my customer's vehicles to their garage door opener. They have a Volvo XC90 and a Toyota Sequoia. The traditional way of pairing does not seem to work. I even went to their house and I looked for a button on the opener but didn't see one. They have a keypad on the outside of their house that has a number pad and two buttons, one that says SEND and the other says PROG. These customers are near and dear to me and I would love to be able to save the day. Please Help!

I've read like 80% of the comments above and am happy for those that got quick n easy solutions.

But I am getting frustrated with my Controlla-Door garage. The picture that you have at the beginning is exactly like mine. I have this new remote which is supposedly compatible with Controlla-door 4 garages.

I pressed and held the remote button, pressed once on the GREEN 'learn' button and there's a little green light which lights up after doing so. Nothing happens!

My wall button works though. Can't seem to figure it out!

Please help!

Jeff, i dont have much faith in those "universal" remotes. Some work and some dont.. The remote you will need could be a 61LM or an 81LM remote. It depends on the yr the machine was built. If you can find the manufatcture date on the board..i will see which one will work on yours. If you look at the picture of the logic board at the top of this post, the far right bottom has the mafgr date on it..this one has 09/06.. Let me know if you have questions...Joe

Shao 16 months ago

Hey Sweeps,

Thanks for such a prompt reply! The remote is a Chamberlain remote Model 4333A (with 3 buttons).

The date of the manufacturing date isn't on the Board, however it's a "Controll-A-Door 4".

I'm just absolutely clueless as to what the next step should be..

Thanks again Sweeps!

Cheers,

Jeff.

That the model numbers need to have a "U" in the model number. What do you know about that? Do I need a Homelink Compatible Transmitter?

Sweeps Luck profile image

Sweeps Luck Hub Author 15 months ago

Gran..im not sure about that one. That may be the problem. I would make sure the car has accepted the remote..then press and release the learn button on the machine and hold down the homelink button for a few seconds. Check and see on the quantum to see if it has a U in the model number. Sometimes the homelink system has to be programed a few times before it takes the code. They can be a pain in the butt lol....Joe

I just bought a used Saturn Aura XR. I don't think the homelink on the car is going into "programming mode". I've read the instructions and I am able to hold the two outside buttons and get it to flash rapidly, but when I try to program a button with my remote (I have a LiftMaster Pro) the Homelink doesn't ever flash rapidly, just slowly. Am I missing something?

Thanks,

Scott

Scott..The homelink may have already accepted the code. Have you tried to program the homelink to the garage door opener? If not you are missing a step. To program the homelink to the opener..press and relase the learn button on the opener, while someone in the car holding down the homelink button. Hope this works for ya..let me know...Joe

I have an older Sears Craftsman 41A3516-2 garage opener (remote is 139.18718). I was adding a second remote tonight for my wife and it somehow "learned" a neighbor's car remote. I need to clear that code but cannot. I have tried holding the yellow learn button on the main opener unit for over a minute and the LED will not go out!!! Does anyone know how to clear the codes???

I have had to unplug the garage opener for now so the neighbor does not open my garage every time he uses his remote.

Thanks

Joe..unplug the machine for a least a minute. Plug it back in and hold the learn button down for about 20 seconds..it should clear..if not, the logic board is bad and needs to be replaced..as old as that one is//re[lace the unit..the new units will not do what yours is doing now..sorry.

Joe 14 months ago

Sweeps..Tried that and the codes will not clear. Everything was working fine and still works fine except my damn neighbor opens my garage door every time they use their car door opener :( I doubt it is the logic board since everything works except clearing the codes.

Scott 14 months ago

Thanks for the help. I had my wife in the car holding the button down while I pressed the learn button. No luck. I cleared the codes on the opener and tried again, same deal. I was able to program the two remotes back that came with the house. I tested the remotes after clearing the codes just to make sure they cleared correctly. They did...

On my 2007 Saturn Aura, it says to hold the remote 1-3 inches away from the HomeLink buttons, press and hold the HomeLink button while simultaneously holding the remote button. It will flash slowly at first and then rapidly when it is accepted. I can never get it to flash rapidly. I've held it down for over a minute and it just stops blinking like it gives up...Frustrating. Any ideas? And thank you for the help. It's not often you find someone willing to help a total stranger, on the internet, for free. Much appreciated!

Scott..i think there is a problem with the homelink system. If the machine is working with the remotes..it should accept the other one once the car accepts the remote.

Scott 14 months ago

That's what I was thinking too. Since the Homelink doesn't even look to be syncing with the remote itself...I guess I'll call my salesperson and see what she can offer. It's still under warranty so I would think they'd be able to cover it. Thanks again for the help.

I have two garages, and two remotes are programmed to one. I tried programming one to one, but it makes both go up/down. How do I get each to be unique?

Sweeps Luck profile image

Sweeps Luck Hub Author 14 months ago

Frank..you will have to erase both machines and then reprogram the remotes. Hold down the learn button for about 20 seconds, and then take one remote and hold down the button you want to program to that door. Then press and release the learn button. Do the same for the other remote. Let me know if you have any problems..Joe

Hey sweeps, My wife and I both have Toyotas, one being a Camry (02) and a Prius(05)...we both want to program our cars to open the garages...I get kinda confused reading all these post...can u help??? My garage is a Liftmaster

Sweeps Luck profile image

Sweeps Luck Hub Author 13 months ago

Cstrasser..take the remote that you want to program to each car. Follow the cars manufaucurers instructions on how to program the remote to the homelink system. After the car accepts the remote control into the homelink...have someone push and release the learn button on the garage opener while someone is in the car pressing the homelink button. You should hear a click on the opener, and the lightbulb should flash once when the car is programmed. Hope this helps..Joe

cstrasser 13 months ago

we only have one remote for some reason, will we be able to program both cars with only one remote?

cstrasser 13 months ago

Hey sweeps, OK I've taken the garage remote and held it close to the button in the car....held down both until the one in my car started blinking. Once it started blinking, i released the remote and had someone press the "learn" button on the garage door motor....and the light blinked but the button doesnt work in my car still? What am I doing wrong?

Tmo...You wont need the learn button with your remote..with a dip switch remote..all you have to do is get the car to memorize the remote and it should work. It make take several tries to get the car to accept it...Joe

Hi I have 2003 Acura RL. I am having problem program the remote button on the sun viser to work with my garage door opener. I have a Lift Master opener. First I "trained" the button on my sun viser by holding 2 outside button for 30 seconds until the light flashing rapidly. Then I have someone PRESS and HOLD one of the button on the sun viser and I press the "Red-Train" button on the door opener. NOTHING happens...no light blinking or no click sound. Any suggestion what's wrong or what should I try? Thanks in advance for your help

Ray..if the remote has been learned by the car..it should program to the machine very easily. Its sounds as if the remote hasnt been taught to the car.. They can be a pain, and have to do it several times before the machine will accept it. You will hear a click on the machine when the remote has been accepted..Joe

I had to erase all codes in my Overhead Door opener (by pressing the learn button for 20 seconds) because each successive car programming wiped out the previous one, as Sweeps Luck stated above ( I guess I had maxed out my machine). I was worried that if I did erase everything, my handheld remotes would no longer worked. I was right. They didn't. But all I had to do was reprogram each handheld by pressing the learn button on the motor and then pressing the button on the one-button remote. It worked perfectly on both handhelds. Then I went and programmed both cars, according to the owners' manuals. Both programmings worked without wiping out the other one. Thanks Sweeps. What's funny is I called an Overhead Door technician last week describing the problem and he was stumped. He said he had never heard of such a thing and didn't know how to fix it. I guess I should call him back and explain the process to the expert.

We can't get our 2 '06 Hondas to talk with the overhead brand opener. After we reset the unit our '99 Accord accepted the codes but the other two still will not. We followed both the overhead manual and the Honda manual. Any ideas? Thanks!

Yes, it is..you may have to teach the car to the machine..after you teach the remote to the car..then press and release the learn button and then press and hold the button in the car..this teaches the car to the machine.. Im not very familiar with the OHD brand of openers..Joe

Erica..Once you erase the codes... Press and release the learn button and then hold down the remote control button. You should see the light bulb on the machine flash and go off. The remote is programmed. Once the remote is programmed..follow the instructions in the cars manual to program the remote to the car..once the car has learned the remote..then press and release the learn button again and then hold down the button on the homelink in the car to program the car to the machine.

Sweeps...I NEED your help! I have tried everything (except resetting the opener itself) and I still cannot get the home link to work! After I followed the steps to program my visor, it says that when the programmed button is pressed the light should be on continuously. I understand that I will have to train the car to the machine but I can only do that when the visor button is trained! I have been trying this forever and nothing works! I have a Genie 1/2 HP Model 2060L and the remote is the Genie GICT390-3BL 3-Button Remote. Thanks

Hey Sweeps...VERY happy to tell you that my perseverance and bit of tech know how, I was able to get it to work FINALLY! I followed all of your instructions and had to reset the machine itself and after reprogramming everything it worked. Thank you so much. I think you may know more about Genie openers than you think! :)

We've moved into a different house. The garage has an opener on one side but no keypad or remotes. Can I program a remote from my old house to my car, then the car to the machine or is there no hope?

Richard 7 months ago

Okay...Here is my issue. We have a Quantum 3213 with a wired opener and two wireless. Everything was working great until I tried to set up the remote in our Honda Ridgeline. Reading your answers above I can see where I went wrong with the programming but now neither of my wireless remotes work (nor does the pickup). The only manual I could find was for a 3214. it said...

1. Press the PROGRAM Switch button located on the garage door power head unit once. The red PROGRAM STATUS light on the motor power head unit and overhead lamp will turn on and remain lit for one minute, indicating that it is ready to learn the Transmitter.

2. Press the button on the Transmitter you wish to use to operate the door. The PROGRAM STATUS light on the power head will turn on and off three times indicating a successful learn.

3. Press the same button on the Transmitter once more to confirm operation. The opener will turn on and move the door.

It didn't work. I pushed trhe program button and the red light came on. Then I pushed and held the button on my remote. It's light came on for a second then went blank for about 12 seconds before flashing quickly. But nothing else happens. The flashing stops and the door does not open. I changed the batteries on both. I think I erased the codes from the power head and now I have to get out of the car, walk to my garage, go inside and push the wall button. Can you help?

Sweeps Luck profile image

Sweeps Luck Hub Author 7 months ago

Richard..it would be best to erase all codes and start over..Hold down the learn button on the power head for about 20 seconds..then press and release the learn button while holding down a button on one of the remotes. The machine can only hold five programs in it, and after that it starts to drop the first one put into the machine..hope this helps...Joe

Robert..you will have to follow the instructions on the car as to how to teach the remote to the car. After the car has learned the remote..then have someone press the learn button on the opener..and then press and hold the button on the car..what you are doing is teaching the car to the machine..let me know if you still have problems//Joe

Rob 2 months ago

I have a new 2012 buick... the manual tells me to push the two outside buttons in the car, I did... then I pressed the smart button on the Linear Garage Door opener, the light flashed and the little red led stayed on... I immediately pushed the button I wanted to use in the car and the light on the door opener flashed. 9 times I have done this (insanity defined right?) but the door still won't open. What am I doing wrong?

Sweeps Luck profile image

Sweeps Luck Hub Author 2 months ago

Rob, the car has not accepted the code...you have to teach the car the remote and then teach the car to the machine. Most cars you hold the two outside buttons down until the light starts flashing fast..then when it starts to flash slow the car has accepted the remote. Then go press the smart button on the machine and then press and hold down the button you programmed on the car..when the lightbulb on the garage door opener flashes on then off..it is programmed. Hope this helps...Joe

Joe,

...frustration...I have the same machine pictured above.

Seems like I have repeated your steps. I have cleared the machine, cleared the car, and can't figure it out. I am trying to program 2 cars. They are both Lexus with homelink. So after I clear the machine, I have no problem re-programming my garage remote back to the garage machine, but I can not get the car to program to the remote or the machine. Any thoughts?

Sweeps Luck profile image

Sweeps Luck Hub Author 7 weeks ago

Colby is sounds as if the problem is the car learning the remote. It can be a pain trying to get the car to learn the remote. I have had to try several times especially on a Mercedes. Once the car learns the remote, press and relase the red learn button on your machine while someone presses the button on the homelink. This teaches the car to the machine, Sounds like the garage door opener is working properly since it is accepting the remote signal. Hope this helps

Colby 6 weeks ago

Thanks Joe.

I couldn't figure it out. Lexus came out and did it for me. They had to unplug the garage unit while they programmed the remote to the car, then plugged it back in to program the car to the garage unit. Not sure why, but it worked! Thanks for your response and help.

I program my car and the handhelds don't work. I reprogram handhelds and car stops working. Only have 2 remotes so no where near 5. What is going on?

Enjaybee 3 days ago

Excellent instructions, but I have some updates that were missed that will help those having problems. When training the homelink in my 2011 Camry, I found that I had to do both sets of training. Also, be sure and clear the homelink buttons of any previous training before you start. Follow the manufacturers instructions. In my Camry I have 3 buttons, to clear the memory, I had to press the two outer buttons and hold until the light went out. I programmed the remote to the homelink button and to the machine. When training the button with the remote, hold the homelink button down until after the rapid flashing and the light goes off. When training the homelink to the machine, hesitate after pressing the homelink button 3 times, then press it a 4th time.
