How to program your garage door remote control

You should be able to program your garage door remote after reading this!
I will be talking about Liftmaster and Craftsman garage door openers. The Chamberlain Corporation makes Craftsman, Chamberlain, and Sears Craftsman garage door openers. Whether you have a chain drive, a screw drive, or, a belt drive opener, they all program the same. There is a "learn" button on the machine that holds the information from the remote control. The learn button may be located on the side of the opener but, most models have them on the rear of the machine. How you can locate the button easily is to find where all of the wires are running into the machine. The learn button is usually square, but, it can be round. The colors of the buttons can be white, yellow, green, red, or the new frequency is purple.
Look at the photo above and you can see the square (red) button located on the left side of the "Logic board". The logic board is the computer that tells the opener whatto do and when to do it. It is also usually the first thing that lightening will hit in a thunder storm. I basically is a radio frequency receiver that picks up electrically transmitted signals. Lightening is an electrical signal, and a very powerful one. The little wire on the bottom right side of the logic board is the receivers antenna. DO NOT CUT IT OFF! I have have been to houses that the homeowners complained about the remote control only working when they get really close to the door. When you cut the wire you alter the frequency of the remote control, and have to replace the logic board. The logic board can cost anywhere from 85.00 up to 100.00 depending on your area. Oh, the prices i just quoted didn't include labor.
Now, for the programing part you have been waiting for. Hold down the square or round learn button that is on your opener for about 20 seconds. This clears any other remote controls that may have been in the machine. NOTE: If you loose your remote control, or, if you are going thru a divorce, you need the clear the opener so that unwanted people can no longer have access to your house. Another tip..... when you go to have your car serviced make sure you keep your remote control with you!
The reason i say this, is not because i am saying car dealerships or repairmen are crooks, but, there are exceptions to every rule. When you go to get your vehicle repaired you give the people your name, address, and your remote control. I know of one problem where a customer dropped off her Mercedes to be worked on and the mechanic had her address, and took her remote control, and went to her house that night and stole her car. Just stick it into your pocket until you get your car back.
Ok, once cleared, you take each remote control, and go to the back of the opener where the learn button is. Hold the remote control button down, and push and release the learn button. You should hear a click, and the lights on the machine may come on for a split second. When this happens, the remote control is programmed. Continue this process until all remotes are programmed. Note: The opener will only hold five remote controls, or, four remote controls and one keyless entry.

the numbers on the door opener (where the battery is) somehow someone messed with it. Now the door opener is out of program. How do i fix it?
Hi Noemi,
You must have a dip switch remote control. It is one of the older ones. To program that one, you will have to go to the back of the machine where the wires are coming out. You will see the same kind of dip swithes there. You must match the dip switches on the remote control with the dip switches on the machine. Doing this, puts them on the same frequency. Hi Yes if the wire has been cut it affects the frequency of the garage door opener. It may work, but you will also be standing under the machine to get it to work.
Browsing the internet to find a solution for my garage door opener remotes and keypad and eneded up here. Great info! Well I have tried all the suggestions posted and was hoping you might be able to idnetify my problem. The remotes were working and keypad as well until a day ago. No storms or anything, they just stopped working. I have an old craftsman installed in '95. There is a green button on my motor housing and I have tried to reset and reprogram as suggested to the prior posts to no avail. Do you think the board is bad? The light comes on, however no blinking lights or clicks and any info for the keypad as well?....I'd appreciate any help. John in Charlotte, NC
Hi John,...try this. Unplug the unit for about 10 seconds. Then plug it back in. Then hold down the green button for about 15 seconds..this will clear all of the remotes and keypad. Then try to reprogram each of them. To reprogram the remotes, just push the green button and then press the remote button and hold it down til you hear the click. For the keypad, press and release the green button on the machine, then walk to the keypad and enter your four digit code, and then hold the enter button down til you hear the click. If it doesnt work after that..i would replace the entire unit. The normal lif of a opener is about 10 yrs, and the service call and board will put you at least half of the cost of a new machine. Also the new machines have a more secure system so that you codes cant be hacked as easily. Hope this helps....just outside of Gville SC by the way...Howdy Neighbor. :-)...Joe

I am also having problems with my wireless key pad. I replaced the battery. Now, the lights on the keypad stay on constantly and I can't get it to allow me to reenter the code. I push the button on the motor, then enter the code and press enter and nothing happens.
Debbie,..it sounds like the keypad is bad. Also, you can only enter 5 remote controls including the keypad into the machine. After five, it starts to drop one of the other remotes. But, in this case, it sounds like the pad has gone bad. Try replacing the pad and re-enter your code. Hope this helps..Joe

I tried to program second remote but it would not take the second one.
Try holding down the program button on the back of the machine for about 15 seconds. This erases all of the remotes and keypads. Then try to program the remotes again. If it doesnt work after erasing all of them, the logic board is bad. If the machine is 10 yrs or older it is usually 1/2 the cost of a new machine just to repair the one you have now. Good luck with it.
Have older remotes, not from my newer opener & receiver. Can older remotes be reporgrammed?..The opener does not have dip switches whereas my oder remotes do? I can forward model numbers if needed...Any help is appreciated
my stanley remote keypad not working.... I disconnected battery, followed reprogramming instructions (entered in rADIO CODE AND ACCCESS CODE), but when I enter the 4 digit code, the entire keypad jsut blinks ideas?
Mike Stanley no longer makes any garage door openers. If you have followed the programming instructions, and it it still doesnt want to take the code..there is probably something wrong with the electronics of the keypad. You can do a google search to see if you can locate a company that still may have an old keypad, but the chances are slim. Sorry i couldnt help further.
Your simple instuctions did the trick. When I purchased my new Scion xD, I bought a new remote and matched the code to the old remote in my other car. BOTH REMOTES FAILED TO WORK!! With your instructions I cleared the old program and installed both remotes. Thank you

Sparky..all you have to do to program a craftsman keypad is first make sure the battery in the keypad is good. Then, have someone press the square program button on the back of your machine..after they press the button you can enter your four- digit number into the keypad, and then press enter, and hold the enter button down for a few seconds. The light on your machine should light up and go right off. It should be programmed at that point.
kheax..you cant add more than 5 remotes to a craftsman or liftmaster machine. Some of the new machines out now will allow it. Like the Marantec..you can add up to 100 to those. You can add speaker wire to your antenna to gain greater range. Just dont shorten it. It will affect the frequency if you cut it .
karlozz.. it sounds like you have a bad remote. You will need to purchase a new one. The circuits will go bad after a while. I have found new remotes out of the box that wouldnt work. Hope this helps.
I just had a new sears garage opener installed and you directions worked great onthe remotes. The original opener (4 1/2 yrs old) started to short out, the guy who installed the new one said it could have been a lighting strike ( we had a heck of a electrical storm this past fall). He said to install a surge protector, but I'm thinking will that stop lighting, from the radio control antenna that hangs in the air even tho it's inside?
Rich..you are correct. The power surge protector will stop most surges through the power lines. But, you can still be hit by lightning strike because of the antenna. The surge protector is worth the cost. You can get them for around 25.00 at Lowes or Home Depot....Joe
I have two remotes from 1997 and two from 2008. It seems I can either program the older ones or the newer ones but not all four at once. Any reason for this ? Thanks for help
I appears that you have been able to figure out most folks problems. So here's mine, I have 2 1/2 hp liftmaster's model 1055-6. Neither have a "learn button" that I can see on the back, top, front etc..., I have two very old remotes that are falling apart and would like to train two new ones. How do I do it with these units?
David it sounds like you have a dip switch unit. There should be some small dip switches on the back of the machine where the wires are coming in. If your remotes arent working you can purchase new ones. You probably have a 61LM or 81 LM remote. When you get the new remote just match the dip switches on the remote to the machine. The new 971LM remotes or the security plus remotes will not work on your older machine. Hope this helps!
Karl, if it is taking two of the remotes it should take all four. You need to hold the program button down on the machine for about 10 seconds. Then try to program the remotes again. Most machines will only hold five remotes, so what is happening is the remotes arent going in the machine because others had been programed before it.

Andres...you may have to many remotes and keyless entries entered into the machine. It will only allow a total of five items to be programed. I keyless entry and 4 remote controls. After that it will start to drop one of the remotes that you are programing. Hold down the learn button for about 10 seconds and relase. Then program the keyless and no more than fur remotes. This should take care of it for you. ... Joe :-)
Hey Sweeps, Someone told me there are two types of technology for the remotes. Rolling code and something else I can't recall. But apparently the unit will only accept one or the other type. It blocks out one type if I already have the other type programed. This makes sense, because thats exactly whats happening with my remotes.
That is true Karl. The other is a dipswitch mode. The rolling code or security plus as it is also called, is a more system.
Hi, I have a dip-switch Stanley unit. I have lost the original remote - but my old car was programmed 9 years ago,(has a homelink system) and it opens the door fine. I'm wondering if I can teach my new car the remote's frequency without having the actual remote control in hand to point at the new car's homelink system (owner's manual says to point the remote 1-3 inches from the car's homelink switches while pressing both buttons). I tried parking the old car behind the new car and pressing the homelink buttons on both vehicles - but it didn't transfer. Any ideas or do I need to buy a handheld remote?
I also have a remote keypad that works great on the 2 newer garage door openers (I have 3 doors total. 2 of the 3 use the intellicode system) but I haven't been able to program this Stanley door opener. Could this keypad be programmed to open the door without a handheld remote?)

Grant..i hate to tell ya but you will need a remote to program your car. It will also be hard to find a stanley remote due to the fact that Stanley no longer makes garage door products. Look on ebay..there may be a Stanley remote for sale on there..good luck!

I was having the exact same problem as you with the KLIK2U keyless entry. I was never able to get both the old Craftsman remote and the KLIK2U keyless entry to work at the same time. I solved this by replacing the old Craftsman remote with a new universal remote from Chamberlain - the KLIK1U. Now everything works like it should. Hope this helps you as well.
Your information was fun to read and was very understandable. I went right out to the garage and correctly programmed 3 remotes. I was so excited, I almost fell of the ladder. Early today, I thought to suprize the other half by programming one new remote and one non working remote, but instead I unknowingly cleared the code from them. I only realized this when I decide to do the same process on the only working remote...and then it was not working. I thought I was gonna die knowing that the other half going to be surprized but even more so...furious. So needless to say I not only programmed all three remotes but I also cleared the code first as you suggested, even though I did the clearing by mistake and before I found and read your instructions. Its all perfect as we just purchased our house and no telling who else has a remote. Thank you so much.
Dre..glad to have helped. I will at least save you a costly service call. In my area it could be 95.00 or more per hour just to come out and do what you did yourself! Check out some of my other hubs. I am also a chimney sweeps and i could possibly help you with your fireplace. I also work on entry doors and storm doors. Oh yea, been meaning to list a hub about dryer vent cleaning. Thank you very much ! It worked really well for my Chamberlain Security + remote. However, it doesn't work with another remote I have, a Marantec M3-2312. I just changed the battery, the light works, but it doesn't seem to "connect" with my door opener.
Can I program different remotes from different companies ??

Thira. It sounds as though the remote control lost the programming when the battery died. You will need to reprogram your remote control to the opener. It can be done by going through the steps on the program board, or, you can cloan that remote control with another remote. To cloan you have to use the three pronged wire connector that is supplied with the opener. Push the connector into the side of the remote control that works, and then push the other end of the connector into the remote that doesnt work. Hold down the button on the remote that works, and then hold down the button on the remote that doesnt work. You should see the one that doesnt work, start to flash. When it flashes it should be programmed, and should work. I hope this doesnt confuse you. Let me know if this works for you. :-) Joe

I talked about that at my Home Depot, and they told me that since my system works with a Security+ remote, I had no choice to buy another one similar to the one I had already. That's what I did.

I bought a Universal clicker but it didn't work. There is a orange button, but no light indicator. Hiya..you will have to use the 971LM remote control. The clicker brand unfortunately sometimes will not work. Also you will need to clear the board. Hold the orange button down for about 15 seconds, and then take each remote, hold down the remote control button and then press and release the orange button. You should hear a click, and the lightbulb should come on and go off. That remote is programmed. You can do four more remotes total. The liftmaster/sears machine will only hold 5 remote controls or four remote controls and one keyless remote. Hope this helps...Joe

Hi Charles..i have never had a question like this.. Most customers complain about the range not being long enough. On the Liftmaster/Craftsman openers there is a screw on the board that will allow you to lengthen the distance..but, i dont know of anything like that on the Genie brands. Sorry, you got me on that one!
The Genie remote does not work farther than the end of the driveway so I assume it is something unique to the Nissan transmitter.
It may be the vehicle range then. Usually isf the range has been shortened from what it used to be, it is usually caused by an electrical spike,( i.e. lightening) or power surge from the power line. When you get the spike it damages the control board..or logic board. Only way to correct this is to replace the board.
I' d like to ask you if there is a possibility to assign a NICE external door opener in the two remaining buttons (left and right) of a Liftmaster 94355E remote control.

Liftmaster control is on 433 mHz with rolling code (84335EML). I don't know if it is exactly that you asked me.

Paul, the frequencys are different. I doubt you can get the remote control to program to the receiver. The marantec is a good system too.

Dusahck,..you must have a receiver that will accecpt the 315mhz remote. You can get a 315mhz receiver and add it to your gate opener. They are not very expensive, and easy to install.
I can't get my door control button to operate. Its look like a door bell button. It's chamberlain with the purple "learn" button.

Cheryl is the remote control a 371 or 373 LM? A 971 or 973 LM will not work on that machine. You may have to totally erase the board and start over. Hold the purple learn button down for about 10 seconds, then take each remote and hold the button down on the remote and push and release the purple button. That should do it. The machine can only hold 5 remotes. Hope this helps
Wow! What great information. Wish I had a laptop so I could take it with me to my garage (been trying your tips and running back & forth to the computer-lol).
My opener is old. Really old. I think it has a red learn button, the cover is off the unit so all that's there is the button. The unit has a wired receiver that works great. My remote was taken by some tenants that used to rent my house. I've held down the red "presumed" learn button, hopefully erasing any old codes.
Now for my question: I bought a "Clicker CLT1D". I found "DIP switches" in the wired wall receiver, not on the main unit. I've tried programming to that AND I've tried using the "smart learn" button. It's not working. Like I say, the unit is really old (the inside panel on the wall receiver says "Mr. Serviceman", just to give you an idea how old! LOL). Hate to buy a new one since the door still works great.
Any other suggestions? You've given great advice so far, better than the instructions with the remote.

Michelle..you will need to get another remote control. You need a 971 or 973 LM. I should work then. Some of the universal clickers will not work for some reason. The frequency must be different. Hope this helps. You should be able to get the remote control at sears or possibly LOWES.
Hello, it seems you answer often, so hope you can help me. I just had a Craftsman 139.53990D installed today. The remotes are programmed fine to the unit, but I would like to program it to my gate as well. My previous opener was programmed with the switches but how do I sync this with my gate opener now. Or do I now have to have 2 openers, one for the gate and one for the garage?
Mo..you will have to get a receiver for the gate that will accept the new frequency for the remote control you now have. They aren't very expensive and, are easy to install. The receiver is around 60- 80 dollars depending on where you get them.
Will non-security+ remotes work on a security+ openers?
No sorry they wont. You will have to use the new security plus remotes.
Hi Sweeps Luck! I noticed on the upper right of your picture there are two screw settings with the up or down arrow for each, can you please tell me what are those for? My remote control can open the garage but can't close it, I wonder if it has anything to do with those.
Hi Roger, the screws are up force and down force. It gives the motor more force to raise or lower the door. If the lightbulb isnt flashing when u try to lower the door, you need to adjust the down force. If the down force is at 5 (for instance) turn the down force to 6 and so on. DO NOT turn it to 10. If u turn it to 10 it will work but, will not reverse if it comes in contact with an obtruction or person. If it is already at 10, it is now time to replace the machine. If the lightbulb is flashing when u try to let the door down, this means the phot eyes are not aligned properly. Hope this helps, if u have any further questions give me a shout. Sweeps luck!

Sure Roger...the photo eyes are located at the bottom of the garage door. You should see a light on both of them. One is a receiver and one is a transmitting eye. One should be lit up all of the time. If the other one isnt on, it means that the eye has been bumped, or you had a lightening strike. To adjust them you can loosen the wingnut on the back side, and wiggle it around until the light comes on. If you cant get the other light to come on, you have probably had a power surge or lightening hit. Hope this helps. If u really need to. i will give my cell phone and i will try to walk you thru it.. While I was trying to fix the photo eyes, I heard a very loud noise... "SPRRUNG..G...G....G...." Happened just like that, out of no where! This job is now out of my hand. But thanks! Regards
Yea Roger, sometimes you just cant win. lol Yep, you need to get a door guy out there now. Those springs can kill if you arent careful. They typically last 10 or so years if they are lubricated. Keep them lubed up with silicone spray that you can get at Lowes or Home Depot. If you need anything else..give me a shout.. Good luck...Joe
Hello Sweeps Luck – I have a more challenging issue. I had a Chamberlain 1/2 opener, and the remote could open the door from at least 200ft away. When I bought a second one (to replace a burnt out old dipswitch model in a 2 door 2-car garage), the range for opening the door dropped to less than 20ft. But the range to open the new opener is still 200ft or more. Any ideas?
Hi Bobzo..it sounds like the battery is weak. Usually when the distance is shortened it is caused by a weak batter, or possibly a lightening strike doing damage to the logic board. It sounds like the battery tho to me. Especially, is another remote will work it just fine..check or replace the battery. Hope this helps...Joe :-)
Thanks for the reply SL. I was not very clear in my original message, I added a second Chamberlain door opener (for the second door in the 2-car garage), not a second remote for the same opener.
However, from the advice you gave to others above, I tried experimenting. I unplugged the new opener, and the range returned to the first one to 200ft plus. When I plug the second opener back, the range to the first opener drops down to less than 20ft. So I suspect there is some interference caused by the new addition.
The new opener is model #182638, and the first opener is model #PD612KC – I don’t know if this helps with anything.

OK, i understand now. It could be radio frequency interference, or, the logic board may have taken a close lightening strike that has affected the logic board. The other thing that can affect the range is the battery being weak. Sorry i cant offer more without being able to put my hands on it....Joe:-)

All of a sudden our built in car garage openers and our hand help remote just stopped working. I reprogrammed the cars but could never get the handheld to work. I followed all the steps in your suggestions and even chnaged the battery in the remote. The main unit goes solid and then bleeps and then nothing happens. the remote is about 2 years old and it is a craftsman. Any suggestions?
Hold down the program button on the rear of the machine for a few seconds, and then re-program the remotes again. The machine will only store 5,and then it will start to drop the first ones added. Let me know if this doesnt work...Joe

Does the same apply with liftgate systems that operate a gate system. I have just a basic remote with one button across the top liftmaster 61LM remote that runs the gate, iam looking to buy more remotes for my staff. Now inside this remote there are 0 through 9 with switches at each number. Do i just configure all remotes to that number configuration?

Hi Emre..on the 61LM..you just set the new remote controls to the dip switch numbers that are on the remote that you are now using. You can add as many of the 61LM remotes as you need. The logic board can handle as many you you need of those. If you change to a rolling code system, you will be limited to the number of remotes that can be entered into the machine. The Dip switch number are the blue plastic piece right? its got "ETD" on the top right corner, and well +0- on the right side with the number ranging from 1-9 with white switches on them. Iam pretty sure this is the part. I see what you are saying thank you for the help. Basically I just make sure all remotes are at the same configuration.

I lost my old remote so I bought a new one. We have a chamberlain 1/2 hp opener. I had a friend of mine buy the new remote so I knew it would be the right one. The opener just has big red button on the back so I'm assuming this is the learn button. I don't see dip switches anywhere. I've tried so many times to program the new remote and it just isn't working. I've followed your instructions. I've tried pushing the red button then holding in the remote button. I've tried pushing them both at the same time. Nothing seems to be working. The garage door opener worked perfectly fine until now. And since I've cleared out the remotes, now neither my husband or I can get into the garage without going inside the house to open. Please help!
Hi Kort..The original remote controls you have will work. You will have to re-program them. Take one of the remotes that worked before and hold the button down on the remote..while doing this..push the red button on the back of the machine and release the red button..Dont hold the red button down..thsi erases all of the remotes. You should hear a click and the light bulb on the machine should flash once..when it does..it it programed. You do the same for the other one...As far as the new one..you must make sure that it is the same..they look the same but, the frequencys are different. The ones that worked before are probably LM971, LM972, or LM 973 remotes. You will have to get the same as the ones just mentioned. If they are the same it could have a dead battery or, the remote control is bad. We have taken new ones out of the box and they would be bad. Let me know what it says on the back side of the new remote, and what the old remotes have on the back. You machine will hold 5 total remotes or keyless entries. Try this and let me know what happens. I will be checking this account a few times tonite...hope this helps...Joe :-)
Thank you very much for the clear instructions and photo. This was the only site that explained where the learn button was (and provided good photo)--first time homebuyer that has ran out of $ (did not want to have a repair man fix). The GDO is now working again!

I have an old Sears garage door opener . . . I bought a universal remote for it but I could not get it to work. So I went to a Garage Door Opener Store and they sold me a remote that has dip switches in it??? I told them that my opener had a green learn button. I have not been able to get it to work. What am I doing wrong????
Hi Mary, Unfortunately some of the universal remotes will not work on the openers. You will need a 81LM remote. A dip switch remote wont work i dont think. The frequencys are different. That should fix you up after that. Hope this helps ..let me know..Joe

Mary, check with you local sears parts center. Chamberlain Corp makes Liftmaster and Sears Craftsman openers. All parts interchange. Tell them you need to get an 81 LM remote control...if they cant find one let me know..i should be able to track on down for ya..also check on Ebay..they have good prices on them..let me know if u have any problems ...Joe :-)

SD, it sounds like you have tried to program the unit to many times. You will have to hold down the smart button on the machine for about 15 seconds. Then re-enter the remote controls into it. You can only enter a total of five and after that it will start dropping the first one that you have entered, like it is now doing. Hope this helps...Joe

Hi John..it really depends on the gate opener..some will allow 5 remotes while others will allow 15..if it is dropping one of the first remotes added..that is what your problem is..You would have to let me know what the model is so i can find out how many it will hold...thanks..Joe :-)
I was trying to program the homelink system on my new car and followed the instructions on my owners manual, some how I managed to screw up every thing, my 2 remot controlls will only open the door and when I try to close the door with them I get continuas light flashing on the opener with no movement at all!
the only way to close the door is by holding the enter bottun until the door closes completly, otherwise the door will open back up again.
my opener is a craftsman model 139.53684.

Sam, the lights flashing has no bearing on programming your remote controls. The reason the lights are flashing, s because the photo eyes at the base of the door haved been knocked out of alignment. Both have lights on them, one is green, the other may be yellowish. Even fi both are on, look to see if there is a little flickering of the lights. If one of the lights are out, or, if you see flickering, move either of the lights slightly until you can line up the lights. When both lights are on, and are steady, you should be able to proceed on programming the remotes. Hope this helps... Joe
Both lights are out! even though I didn'nt touch those at all I tried to see if they are alinged and it dose look like they are, so do you think that they have gone bad maybe? I do have 2 new ones on hand.

Yea try the new photo eyes..you may have had a power surge that killed the other eyes..do this first..disconnect the other eyes at the machine..the white wires go to the middle screw, and the black striped wires go on the screw on the far right...then take the new eyes to the back of the machine, hook the wires up and hold the two eyes close to each other and make sure that the lights come on...if they dont you have a bad logic board. Sometimes a power surge will take out the board and not the eyes. Sometimes tho..it gets both. Try that before you connect the new eyes to the bottom of the track. This will save you some time. I have a craftsman garage opener model 136.53673SRT3 09/98 when I follow the instructions for programming it programs the 1st remote but will not program the 2nd one. When I hold the remote button and push and release the learn button the LED light stays on. What am I doing wrong??? this cancels the first.
Hi Pat, It would be best if you erased the entire board and start over. Press the red square button on the back..hold it down for about 15 seconds. Then hold the remote button down and press and release the red smart button. You should hear a click and the lightbulb should flash on and off. Then program the other the same.. I have a five month old craftsman gdo, remote control is not working well. Followed you instructions, battery fine, antenna is never touched, safety sensor is working, reporgrammed, but still, need be very close to the door to try many times to open garage door with remote control. it looks like everything is normal, any suggestions?
Hi John..it is either the romote control, or the logic board. Try another remote control. If the other remote control does the same thing..it is the logic board. The logic board is expensive..so, you may want to just put up with it.. it does sound like a weak remote control. Hope this helps....Joe

hey im loosing my mind can you help? i have a remote one with the line one one side that is suppose to be for the gate{community} however when i hold down the purple learn button,thats the only side that seems to open the door or the only one i can program,the other side wont open the door but it does send some sort of signal cuz i see a yelloow light blinking on the unit any advice?
Anthony, the remote for the garage door, has to be a purple button as well. If the garage door is red the frequencys are different. Otherwise, the remote should work for the door and the gate. Let me know how it works out for you.

I followed your instructions above, and while both remotes were working individually before, after resetting (and putting in new batteries) only one of the remotes will make the unit light blink off and program. Do you think the other remote is just kaput? I try to program #2, nothing happens, but when I click #1, no problem. Try again with #2, and no dice, tried another battery and same issue. Hi Pat..It sounds like the remote could be bad. If you have totally erased the board..it is a bad remote. Have u tried just programming the remote that isnt working? It sounds like it is dropping the other remote. Let me know what it does..Joe
I have a craftsman 1/2 hp grage door opener. yesterday BOTH remotes stopped working; however wall switch works fine. I changed the batteries and it did not change anything. I then tried to use the LEARN button and reprogram the remotes. I was only able to reprogram them when I held the remote up to the logic board and then it recogized the remote. Howver when moved several inches away from the logic board it will not work. I would assume this is an internal issue w/ the unit and not remote issue. Is this an issue with the antenna or Logic board? Any help tips or advice would be appreciated.
Sounds like u have lost the logic board...You can find a replacement online,and install it yourself. What u will need is the model number on the back to amke sure u get the right one. The number will be something like this..41A54 yadda yadda ..not the other numbers...Unplug the machine, take the four screws out of the logic board, and then unplug the plug on the back of the logic board. Installation is the reverse order..then prgram your remotes. Hope this helps..if not let me know..Joe

You can do a search on ebay for the logic board. That is about the right price for one. Sometimes, you can find them cheaper on there. If the opener is just afew yrs old then i would geet a new logic board. If not, get a new opener. The life of a machine is 10 or so yrs depending on the use that it gets. Hope this helps...Joe

Lisa try to clear the board again, and then try to program the remote that you said wouldnt program before. If it still wont program, the remote control is bad, and you need another one. I'm trying to program a remote for my Mom's old (1994)GDO. There is no learn button. There is no instruction manual. It's a Sears model 139.53640. I went to a sears parts store - they looked up our address and sold me the right remote. One problem, the instructions told me to adjust the switches in the new remote the same as the old remote - there is no old remote - they're lost. How do I program an old switch remote without knowing the correct switch sequence?
Hi Sam, you have an old dipswitch model. On the back of the machine where the wires are..you will see the dipswitched on the machine. Each dipswitch hasa three settings. They are up, middle and down. Make sure that the switches on the remote match the switches on the machine. You can use a pencil point or pen point to adjust the dipswitches. i have a similar problem to andres. i just bought a Chamberlain Universal Keyless entry key pad. Myproblem is that i can have the key pad work or the remotes. I cant seem to have them both work at the same time. I'v tried one remote & pad and 2 remotes and pad. I even have a chamberlain clicker universal remote and it wont work with the key pad either. Am i doing something wrong? program keypad then go back and hit the orange learn button while pushing down the remote botton and nothing happens. I need help please. =)
Hi Cheryl...clear the board by holding down the orange button for about 15 seconds, then try to enter the two remotes, and then the keypad. You may have had to many stored in the machine, and it was starting to drop the first ones entered. The machine can only hold a total of 5 remotes/keypads. Let me know if this fixes it.

Cheryl..sounds like your logic board is bad. It happens over time, or, if you have had a power surge. You can buy another board on ebay, but, they are about 89.00 or so. Let me know if you need any further help
Abdul..no a Genie remote will not work on a craftsman..They are different frequencys. If the door wont go down all the way..the sensitivity needs to be adjusted more. It is hard for me to tell you where to look to adjust it without seeing the machine. Genie has several diiferent ways tro adjust, and they are located in different areas.
I have a 6 month old Chamberlan 1/3 hp 3245 GDO and was recently given a Craftsman 139.52684 keypad. I do not know the 4 digit securty code of the Craftsman keypad. I've press the square program button on the back of the GDO, than enterd my four-digit number into the keypad, and then pressed enter and held the enter button down for as much as 2 minutes. The little light next to the square blinks but the light on my machine does nothing.
Ernie, the new GDO more than likely has a purple learn button. If the keypad is older it may require the red button board. Look and see if the model is a 976lm..you need a 376lm for your unit. Also, the keypad you need will have a symbol on it that kinda looks like a circle with brackets..the older keypad will have security plus on it. If you have the security plus keypad..you will need to buy the newer keypad. Hope this works...Joe

The system is the Security+ Chamberlain LiftMaster Model 1265LMC, but the guide shows a keypad with an ENTER button. Our keypad looks generic, it has no brand name and no model number.
Ok press the buttons on the keypad and see if the buttons light up. If not the battery is bad. If the battery is good, the keypad will need to be replaced. I just had to replace my brothers..his was doing the same thing.
The keypad lights up, so the battery is okay. I pressed the red button on the motor unit, and held it down until the indicator light went out, which per the manual should have cleared all previous codes. I pressed the learn button again, and entered a new code on the keypad, after which I held down the "0" key (acting as an enter key). After five seconds or so, the keypad lights flash a few times and then turn off, leading me to believe the new code has been learned. However, when I try to enter the new code nothing happens. I have the sense that I am really close to figuring this out, but I am still doing something wrong.
Kees, ok lets try this..erase the board..do this by holding down the square red button for about 15 seconds. Then wait a few seconds and the press and release the red button, walk over to the keypad and enter your four digit number,and then hold the enter button down on the keypad. You should hear a click on the garage door opener and the lightbulb should flash. When this happens the keypad is programed. Then pree and release the red button and press a remote control and hold it down. And you should hear the click again. Then all you do then is to program the rest of your remotes. You can only put five remotes/keypads into the opener. I hope this fixes it.

I have two Craftsman garage door openers (about 12 yrs old)and three remotes with blue keys. Each has one large rectangular key, one medium round, and one small round. I can get two remotes programmed but the third will not sync up with the opener. I have held the button on the opener in and cleared everything. The first two I program work and the third won't. Not specific to any of the remotes. Whichever the third one is won't work. I've heard you say up to 5 should work. Any ideas?
Hi Grover..it should hold five since you have cleared the board. Now, since it is holding two or three..it means the logic board is bad and needs replacing. It must have gotten power surge or a lightening strike. At the age of your machine, it would be best to replace the machine. Cost of a new board is around 90.00...the remotes on the old machine will not work on the new machine.

I'm having a real hard time trying to figure out how to program my Klik2U remote with my Chamberlain garage opener. Its a really old one. I believe it might be a 41a3626, but I'm not sure. I do not have the original remote or the dip switch sequence. I looked in the back and the Smart/Learn button is grey, but are no dip switches in the back. The instructions tell me to enter the Dip Switch Sequence, but I don't have it. Is there a way I can program this? Thanks for all your help!
i dont think the klick2u will work on this machine. You will need to use the 81LM remote control. The dip switch remote is a 61LM.
Hey..hopefully you respond to this. I have a 1/2 craftsmen garage opener that came with the house. The remote control is a green button one. I bought a white button one not realizing that it was a green button because my wife had the green remote with her while she was at work. I programmed the white remote and it can operate the door. My problem is that I cant get both of them to work together. When you program both of the remotes do you hold the button of each at the same time? Or am I missing somthing? Sorry if you posted the answer to this before. Hopefully you can save me a trip to Sears. Each remote can operate individually but not in sync...any suggestions?

Chris clear the board..do that by holding down the learn button for about 15 seconds..release the button after 15 seconds and then get one of your remote controls...hold the button down on the remote control..then press and release the learn button..when u hear the click, it is programmed. Then add the other one the same way. If you are holding the learn button down it erases the remote controls. Just remember when programming push and release the learn button..when erasing..hold the button down....It sounds like you tried to program the remotes to many times, and it was starting to drop the last one programmed. A craftsman can only hold five remote controls..hope this fixes it for ya..if not, you have a bad logic board.
ok I just tried clearing the board by holding down the button for 15 seconds and holding the button on one remote and I got the click. Now that I have one remote done when I try and just press and release the learn button with the second it is not getting the second. The thing that is not clear is how do you do the second the same way. I cant wipe it out again because than it would drop the first which is what I am doing. Am I just pressing and releaseing the learn button while holding down the second remote button?

Hi Johnny, yes you can program three doors to the one remote control. What you have to do is push and release the learn button on the machine you want to program, and then push the remote control button you want to work for that door. You will hear a click and the machines lightbulb will come on and then go off..the remote is then programmed to that do. Just continue to do the other doors. Note: The remote control must be for the same type of machine..in other words a Genie will not work on a Craftsman opener..hope this helps.. Joe

is the Craftsman 139.53753 compatible with an older model remote control opener 139.53681B. I have two garage doors and I am unable to program the older model remote control opener to the new unit. They are both Craftsman and are like for like.

Hi Chris, yes u can program both doors with one remote control. First you have to clear both boards. To do this, you pres down the learn button on the first machine for about 15 seconds. Then press and relase the learn button and then choose a button on the remote that you want to program for that door, and hold that button down until you har a click and the lightbulb flashes once. It is then programmed. You can do the rest the same way. I sometimes will program the large button t raise both doors when the one button iss pressed. Let me know if you have any problems. Note you can only program a total of five remotes in each machine..after that, you will start dropping programs.
Perhaps someone can help. I can program the remote just fine on my Chamberlain opener. But when I program the keypad it wipes out the remote connectivity. When I reprogram the remote it wipes out the keypad. I'm spinning in a circle here--any suggestions?

Hi, I have a Lift master Formula I and i was using my remote until my wife lost it, after a year a bought two remotes, Linear MCT-11, and i tried to program them but i could not get them to work, I cleared the logic board and followed your instruction but nothing, also i unplugged the unit then plugged back in and cleared the logic board and program them again but both wont work. Is there any way to find out if the logic board is bad? or What can i do? Thanks for your help.
Hi Edgar, i hate to tell you this but, the Linear remotes will not work on the Liftmaster...they are totally different frequencys.. You will need to get a 971 LM if you have a red learn button, or a 371lm if you have a purple learn button..hope this helps...Joe
I just moved into a new place with a Liftmaster garage door unit that receives the 61LM opener. There are the switches on the motor and in the receiver. I happen to have 2 liftmaster sercurity plus 971LM and 973LM openers. Are these programmable to my current unit? If so, how?
Bonnie, you will need to get a 61 lm remote for your machine. The 971 and 973 remotes have a different frequency....sorry
I have a non-remote question. My friend has a Liftmaster 1/2 hp security + model# 41A5021-D. It has a wall control with three buttons: up/down, light and remote on/off. He would like to add another button by a different service door. Can we use a regular door bell type push button in parallel with the main controller? Thanks for your help.
Hi Rob..yes you can. It is just two wires and they are low voltage..24v.. Just connect the two wires to the new button and it should work. If you had another button like you have now it would work as well. I have the same set-up on my barn..i just cant turn the light on and off..no big deal to me as i just want to open or close the door from that position. Hope this helps..Joe

ok im so lost i consider myself fairly tech savvy and competent in most things i installed a chamberlain 248730 model yesterday after some initial confusion in making the adjustments in the up/down limits and forces i got it installed and working great......until i went to program an additional remote i have two spare chamberlain security + remotes one is brand new just bought at the same time as the opener and one is older came with a friends car when he bought it i have tried programing them both neither will work i tried clearing out the codes using the procedure listed here still wont work i cant tell you if i can still program the one that came with it as it isn't here at the moment i will let you know tomorrow some time nothing seems to be working i am thinking about getting a multi-function control box to try programing it with that using the secondary programing instructions i hope not to have to do that as i would consider it a waste of money the door bell button works fine lol please help im about to tear my hair out over this also dont knwo if it is relevent but the l.e.d light is flashing an error code 5 flashes signifying motor overheating or bad RPM sensor cant see any relevence to my problem but what do i know than k you for your time.

ok i just did some additional research and have found what i think is the problem your input would still be appreciated though the remote's i have have white buttons which from what i have found are for older systems with the "orange" learn buttons and what i need are the 315 Mhz remotes with the gray buttons that are for the "purple" learn buttons please let me know if my suppositions are true again appreciate your time.

Jon, what color is the learn button on the back? If the learn button is purple you need to use the 371LM..if it is orange it uses the 971LM. If the new remote has a little round insignia like a radio wave on it, it is a 371LM remote, and it will only work on a purple button learn code. Sounds like you have a a new and old remote and trying to use them both. Clear the board and retry..using only the right remote. If you tried several times you have jmabed the board. Dont try to use the multi code remote..they usually wont work..let me know how it does...Joe

added an additional klik1u (clicker) remote to my liftmaster 61LM remote(this one has dip switches. i think this was a replacement remote.) on my liftmaster opener i think the model is k710 it has a yellow learn button and no dip switches. The new clicker i can program, but now the old one doesnt work. tried resetting and no luck. the clicker has dips available. tried matching dip's from the two remotes but still cannot get the old one to work anymore. it was working fine before. battery is good. I am trying to avoid buying another clicker, but am considering that it may be my only option.

Hi Johnny..hmmm if you erased the board and tried to program the old remote...it just may be bad. I would think it would work if the clicker is working it too. If the dip switches match of the remotes , the learn button should accept it. It is an older system so hopefully the logic board isnt going bad. If the board is bad, you are better off buying a new machine. Good luck with it..sorry i couldnt do more.
Hey there. I have a KLIK1U and I have reprogrammed it to the garage door. Unfortunately, the main gate to our complex isn't as easy. There are no visible dip switches and no accessible "smart switch" points. They say that it is easy to program, but I am stuck at the moment. We have a dip-switch list but it is only for 10 digits and not 12. I have tried every combination with the info I have, but to no avail. Please help!

Rory, there is three positions on the remote..only use the first 10..make them the same as the other one..for the last 2 numbers..you will see three positions..put the two in the middle position..it is the off position.

Hi Tricia..holding down the red button for 15 seconds clears the board..you now need to program the remote.. To do that, hold down the button on the remote control, and then press and release the red learn button on the machine. The lightbulb on the garage door opener will come on and go out when it is programed..Let me know if this works..Joe :-)
Thanks for the reply..tried yor suggestion but Nothing happens..the light on the remote lights up and the yellow light stays solid for roughly 6 seconds on the gdo then starts to blink. No clicks, no light comes on..sooo frustrated..
It really sounds like u may have the wrong remote control. If you have a red square learn button on the machine..you should be using a 971LM remote or a security plus remote. Check the remote and see what you have and let me know..thanks. Joe
I have a Craftsman Model #139.53954 opener. I bought a Craftsman keyless pad. I've cleared the memory in the machine. It appears that I can only program either the remote or the keyless pad. I can't get the machine to store both codes. Any ideas?
Ron, if one of the two will program, the other one should as well. There may be a problem with the logic board. The logic board is the pice that has the learn button on it. Try to erase the board again..hold it down for about 20 seconds and then try to program the keyless and the remote. How old is the machine? and what color is the learn button? Red or purple, green? Ron, the remote that is used on that machine is the 971LM or 972LM or 973LM..the last numbers..1,2,3, designate the numbers of buttons on the remote..a 971 has one large button etc...The keyless entry you should be using is the 976LM ..You machine should be able to store a total of 5 remotes/keyless entries..Disconeect the button at the door, and try to program the remotes again. Sometimes the door button will have a short causing the machine to not program. Let me know if this fixies it..Joe
Joe, same results with the door button disconnected. I have 2 remotes and tried to program both with no problems. No luck with the keypad. I erased the memory and programmed the keyless with no problems, still unable to then program the remote(s). Maybe I should buy a new remote too. What's another $40, right? Ron. check online for a remote..you should be able to get them a little cheaper..remember 971 972 or 973LM. It sounds like the logic board if that didnt do it.. Let me know if the new remote will work it'..good luck man!

Josh, you cant get both machines to work using one remote control. The purple button is 413Mhz and the red button is 315 mhz. Different frequencys totally. The Homelink system in your car will accept either or both. You can change the logic board to a purple button, but, you are looking at roughly 89.00 for the board. The purple button logic board was added because the red button logic boards were close to military used frequencys, and they were being disrupted when military radio waves were being used. I have a Sears GDO Security + system with an outside wireless keypad and two remotes. One remote came with the unit purchased in 1998, the other remote purchased 2 years ago to replace one stolen from my car.
Suddenly the oldest of the two remotes stopped working. Thinking it was the battery in the remote I put in a new battery and tried to reprogram the remote. When it wouldn't allow me to reprogrammed I cleared all codes and reprogrammed the remote with the new battery. When I tried to reprogram the second remote I, like others above, found that I could only have one of the two remotes programmed at a time. I can reprogram the wireless keypad and one remote but not the other. It doesn't matter which remote is programmed, each one works when it is programmed but it just won't let me program a second remote.
So my question is whether it is more likely to be a problem with the remote or a problem with the control board in the GDO unit?

Bill, i am afraid that it is your control board. If it isnt an old machine..you can find one on ebay. If it is about 10 yrs old..just replace the entire openere..sorry

OK....I consider myself fairly handy, however I am stumped. I have a Genie 1/2 HP screw drive door opener that came with the house when I purchased it (looks to be an older model). I cannot find the model number anywhere-(I took off the light cover and look on top and back). There is also isn't a learn button. Is this possible? I am racking my brain...I don't see any switches either.... HELP!!!
Ginger, the learn button should be on the front of the machine under the light cover. It is a round button that sticks out. It should be black in color. Hope u find it..Joe

Hi Trina..its easy..make sure the battery in the keyless pad is good. If it is...on the back of the garage door opener..there is a square button..it could be red or orange..push and release the sqaure button and then walk over to the keyless pad and enter your four digit number and push the enter button on the pad. You should hear a click on the opener, and the lightbulb should come on and go back off. If it does..you are finished. Let me know if this doesnt work....Joe :-)

Hi, I have a Chamberlain Security system and Security+ remotes. Im trying to program one for my #1 door. When I finish the Learn on #1 it opens #1 and door #2. The other remotes are fine. Hi Karebear..On the community gate..if it is chamberlain/craftsman product..you will have to find the learn button on the gate operator. It is inside the unit. It will program just like the one on you house. Hold down the button you want to use on the 973LM..then press and release the button on the gate opener. If it isnt a chamberlain gate opener. i doubt the 973 lm will work. The frequencys of different manufacturers are usually different. Hope this helps..let me know.
have a Cahmberlain Liftmaster professional 1/2 hp with an orange learn button and amber ligh. No remote except hard wired one by interior door. I bought the clicker model klik1u and followed the directions for the remote. It works to opne the gaage but does not close it. What am I doing wrong?
Hi Lorraine..if it opens the door it will close the door. The reason it isnt going down is because there is a problem with your photo eyes..the little lights at the bottom of the door. They both have lights on them, one should be green the other yellow.. If one is on, and the other isnt..it means that they arent looking at each other, or, there is something blocking the beam. When you push the remote to make the door go down..does the lightbulb flash on and off?

Greetigns Sweep Luck, I have a problem. I've just moved to a new house, and there's a Chamberlain LiftMaster Security+ door opener,1/2 Hp, part #: 41A5629-2A, there's a number below the "logic Board", wich is: 132B2261-2 (If it helps you in anything). I don't have a lot of knowledge about this machines. I found something diferent in my door opener, the squeare orange button, it doesn't say "Learn" button, it says ERASE button. Anyways I asumed it was the same button you were talking about. The problem is that I already had two working security plus 971LM remote controls, and I was given an old one (security+ 971LM remote),so I wanted to program it with my door opener. So I followed the instructions, first I erased the existing codes, and then when I try to reprogram it, there's the problem. None of the work. I press and hold the remote control button, and press and release the door opener orange button, but nothing happens. Then I tried to press and hold the remote control and press and hold the orange button, and the machine light blinked three times and it remained turn on, so I continue to program the other two remote controls. It did the same thing than the first one. I thougt They were configured, but when I tried them, nothing happens, and I've repeated the process for several times and with the same results. Another thing I think you must know, is that after erasing the existing codes, and trying to configure the new ones, when I press and release the ERASE (in this case) button nothing happens. I have to press and hold both of them to do something. Please I need your soon help, and sorry because I took to long to tell you my problem. Thanks in advanced, I'll be waiting for your answer.
Hi Josue..The square orange button is the learn button..it will also erase the codes. First do this..hold down the orange learn button for about 10 seconds or so. This will erase all of the codes in the machine. After doing this..get one of the remotes..hold the button down on the remote control..then press and release the orange button..the lightbulb on the machine should come on and then go off..once it does that it is programmed. I understand that you were holding doen the orange button to long which erases the last remote that you tried to program. You do the rest of the remotes the same way.. You can program 5 remotes into the machine.. let me know if this works.. Joe

The problem is that when I press the orange button and I hold the remote button nothing happens, the light doesn't turn on, the little light above the learn button just blink one time and that's all, it doesn't do anything else, and then it just keep blinking, like receiving the remote signal, but the door won't open...is there anything else that I can do? Josue..ok, unplug the machine from the outlet..wait a few seconds and plug it back in..this resets the machine..if you try to program it after this and it wont take the remotes..it means you have a bad logic board.. Hope this fixes it

one of my remotes stopped working after many years. I replaced the battery and reprogramed using the above directions. I also reprogramed the key pad. But I could not reprogram the 2nd remote. I could get both of them to work but not at the same time. When trying to reset the 2nd remote, the receiver light just stays on but doesnt flash and the opener light does not click on like when programming the first remote. It appears it will not accept a 2nd remote code even though it will accept one remote and the key pad. Do I need a new logic board?
Hi Joegh..yep sounds like you do need a new board. They are about 85.00..if the opener is over 10 yrs old, i would replace the entire machine..you can get them on ebay or Lowes/Home Depot..
My garage remote has been giving me problems so I changed out the batteries and that did not do the trick. I'm in and out a lot, so when I leave in the morning, it doesn't work, however, an hour later when coming home, it starts working and works just fine in the afternoons. It's nine years old and a craftsman. Any thoughts?
Hi Twaggers..does the lightbulb flash when the door starts down in the mornings? A possible problem could be that the morning sun will hit the photo eyes in the morning at the right angle, and block the infrared light beam. As the sun moves up, the angle changes, the door will work. Look and see if this is a problem. If you go out in the morning, raise the door and then try to lower it, if it wont go down ..cast a shadow over the photo eye without blocking the beam, and press the remote again. If this is the problem..you can reverse the two eyes..in other words put the eye on the left side, and switch it to the right side. The two wires only have 24 volts on them..so they wont hurt you. One wire will have a black stripe on it..just make sure black stripe is to black stripe.. Let me know if this fixies it...Joe

Twaggers..yep sounds like the sun messing with ya. It will also act differently in the summer, and not have problems with it in the fall and winter due to the angle of the sun. See, being a door guy is complicated huh? lol You should see what all is involved with chimneys.. I am also a chimney sweep. I have a Stanley opener. Coffee got dumped in the remote so it doesn't work. I got an identical remote. Opened the back and flipped all the switches to match the one that used to work. Still doesn't work. Is there another step I don't know about. There is no learn switch on my opener.
Hi Tammy...Thats about all you can do for a Stanley. Make sure that they have the same number of dip switches on both remotes. If not, the last ones need to be set at zero. You may have gotten a bad remote. I have gotten several straight out of a new package. Hope this helps....Joe
Hi Joe - I opened the garage door with the remote this morning and there was not a problem with it opening. The light does not flash. I appreciate your helpful post. I have a Genie CM760IC/A. An original genie remote (Model ACSCTG Type 1) and Homelink on a lexus are currently connected to it. I was trying to look online if a Mantect M3-2312 can operate it as well but have had no luck... I also played around with the learning button on the opener.
I also have the RCP02-3101M Unit that came with the remote (for Garage openers that needed a freqency boost)

Phatz..No the Marantec has a totally different frequency than the Genie has. Sorry it will not work it.
I have a 1/2 hp chamberlain. I have one Security+ 950CB remote that works just find. Bought a new remote because we needed one for the kids, but it's a 750 CB with dipswitches. I had an old remote that looked EXACTLY the same, but the model number has faded so I can't tell if it IS the same. When I opened the old remote up, it didn't have dipswitches though. The new remote has dipswitches, but the garage opener only has a learn button. Is there a way I can figure out the dipswitch code?
Hi No Luck..you will have to use another security plus remote. The dip switch remote will not work on your machine. If the learn button is red/orange, you will need a 971LM remote..if it is green you will need a 81LM remote..if it is purple you will need a 371LM remote. Let me know what color of your learn button is if you have any more problems...Joe

If your liftmaster keyless remote doesn't have an enter key, here is how to reset your keyless remote...
Press * and # key together until unit stops flashing.
Enter 1,2,3,4 and the # key.
For green learn key, press 2, then #
For orange/red learn key, press 3, then #
For purple learn key, press 10, then #
Press and release the learn button on the overhead box.
Enter 1,2,3,4 then press an hold any other number until the overhead box blinks.
Wait 10 seconds. Then press 1,2,3,4 and any different number and the door should open or close.
To change your PIN, press 1,2,3,4 and #. Enter your new 4 digit PIN and the * key. To open the door, enter the 4 digit PIN and any other number.

We have a Genie old garage door (about 40 years old) that works great without any problem. The problem is with the remote. It is a 9 switches remote that is broken. I went to Genie's agency and bought new remote (that has 12 switches) which supposed to work as the old remote. The agent adjusted the switches as on the old remote, to the new one.
When I tried to open the door, it didn't work. Is there any way or instruction of how to adjust the switches correctly from 9 switches to 12 switches?

Hi Shany..you can only use 9 digits on the remote..you can try using the first 9 dipswitches on the remotes and then setting the other remaining switches to zero. If it doesnt work then set the first three switches to zero and then set the other nine. Hope this does it for you..Joe
I just moved into an apartment complex in which I have a 2 button lift master remote. They will only give me one remote and I have 2 vehicles. One button controls the front gate and the other controls my garage door. If I buy a new remote is there a way I can program the remote to work on both the gate and the garage? Hi Andy..you can program your new remote. You will have to have access to the learn button on the gate and the garage door opener. You will have to hold down the button that you want programmed for the garage opener, and then press and release the learn buttom. You will hear a click and it will be programed. You will have to the same for the gate. Hope u can get to the learn buttons..lots of times the owner makes it impossible for tenants to get to it.

I posted above about 2 months ago and have been pretty busy. I have one door that is a red button and one that is a purple. Im fairly handy with electronics and you stated swapping the board. If it really were that simple, wouldnt a swap of a few components on the board be able to change the frequency at which it operates? Do you possibly have a schematic for the purple board so I dont have to take the other door apart too and just see which components are different?

Hi Josh..sorry i dont have a schematic for the baords. It is easier just to swap them out. I too know electronics fairly well. I am an amatuer radio operator, and to me it isnt worth the time and aggravation to try to re configure the boards.

I have a Chamberlain Liftmaster programed for my car and my wife's car remotes. My daughter just bought a 2nd hand Lexus (she's rich) and it has built in garage door opener. I can either get hers to work or I can get ours to work but not all three at the same time. Is this something to do with hers being a different system? I clear all codes and then I can get either just hers or just ours. Any ideas?
Al..it should work...there may be something going wrong with your board. It should be able to hold five remotes without any trouble. There may be something going on with her car..they can be a pain sometimes. Try getting another remote control and programming it to the machine and see if it will accept all three remote controls. If it wont accept another remote after clearing the board..that means the board is going bad. Let me know how it works...Joe

Marcelo, have you erased the board and started over? If you have erased the board, and it still wont program..you have a bad remote control. Even though you have a new one..it could still be bad. I cant tell you how many bad remotes i took out of the box that were new. Try another remote, and see if it will program..if another remote wont program you have a bad board.
How do I erase the board? you mean unplugging the motor for a minute and then plug it back in ? btw, when I click the remote buttons, I can see the led blinking receiving signal...

I put my daughter's built in remote into the garage memory and it worked. I then tried to add a second remote from my wife's car and it did not work. I then erased the memory and put my wife's remote in 1st and tried to add my daughter's but it would not work. I then cleared the memory again and added my remote and my wife's remote and it took them both and they worked. Conclusion is that my daughter's system is a digital system and both mine and my wife's are analog so the two systems are not compatible with the memory on the Liftmaster. i.e. I can program 2 remotes but not from different systems of analog and digital. My solution will be to buy 2 new digital remotes for my wife and I or tell my daughter to buy her own house. HaHa. I think I'll be smart and take option one as my wife and daughter are ganging up on me. Thanks for listening.

Hi Rob..i am not sure if the new remote will work on the older machines receiver. Sometimes they will not work. If the receiver box on the wall has little dip switches..you will have to use a remote that has dip switches..and the dip switches on the remote have to match the dip switches on the machine. I am trying to add a remote to my parents LiftMaster Professional Security+ garage door opener. It did not have a remote when they bought the house, and it only has one button, hard wired to the wall to open it.
I have tried and tried to program a remote. I have a “LiftMaster” and “Lift-Master Security+” remote from another house. Both make the light next to the learn button blink. I have held down the learn button to clear it but it never gives a steady glow.
Is there a way to lock out the remotes with a single wall mounted button? The wall-mounted button light is solid red. I have held it down and pushed it repeatedly to see if it changed anything. But I still can’t get the opener to learn a remote.
Robin..what color is the learn button on the machine? If it is green..you need an 81LM.. if it is red/orange you will need a 971 LM..if it is purple..you need a 371LM..You can locck out the remote controls but it has to be a deluxe wall switch. If the remotes are locked out..the wall button switch will be flassing. Hope this helps
The learn button is red. The wall button is not flashing, and the two remotes are a 973LM and a 971 LM.
Robin..ok, you have the right remote controls...im afraid you have a bad logic board. If neither will program..the board is bad. You can find one on ebay..and you just plug them in. Let me know if i can help... Joe

I have a Clicker garage door opener thats a few years old. I have "Brand" switches and dip switches. All dip switches are in the off position.
My Brand switches are OFF ON ON OFF. I tried to program the remote but it wont work?? Once I press the learn button it has never blinked only solid color for 30 seconds, any advice?
I guess I should have mentioned, my Clicker remote model is CLT1 rev B.
Mark..i am not sure if the clicker model will work with the purple button openers. They are toatally different frequencys. I do know that the 371 373 or 372 remotes will work with them . Also, Lowes sells chamberlain remotes for this machine...it has this symbol on it (0). The security plus remotes will not work on this machine.. Hope this helps..Joe

Great job. Now my proble, I have a Sears 1/2 hp motor, very old, i replaced the door opener motor but kept the same remotes and main switch. Its 139.185750 , none of the two remotes work, there are no 'learn buttons' and I could not locate any dip swithces. batteries seem good, there is only one button on remotes and main open/close switch. Hi Raj..the learn button or dip switches are located where the wires come into the machine. If you look at the picture ath the top of this page you will see the logic board..the red swuare button is the logic board..if it doesnt have a sqaure or round button..it will have little dip switches..should be around ten of them..if you cant seem to find them send me a picture of the back of the machine where the wirs come in do i can figure out what remotes you will need...Joe

I bought a house a few weeks ago that has a REALLY old Sears Craftsman button and remote control. The house was built in 1993. It looks like the actual opener has been replaced more recently - it's a Chamberlain 1/2H.P. and it also says 41AC050-1M on it. My man is trying to program the remotes (the old craftsman and a "Genie" remote) but to no avail. We've followed your instructions step by step but can't get it to "click" ?! Any other suggestions?
Trish..what color is the learn button on your machine? A genie remote control will not work on the Chamberlain machine. Let me know what color the learn button is and i can tell you what remotes will work on your machine.

Trish..ok that is a newer machine..you need to get a 371, 372 or 373LM remote. You can also get these remote controls at Lowes where they sell the Chamberlain openers. Do not get the security plus remotes..the remote you want will have this symbol on it..(0). Then you will be able to program it to your machine. Let me know if you have any problems...Joe
I have a Craftsman 315 remote(s) which have stopped working. I've replaced the battery, tried to reprogram them as indicated in the owners manual. I've bought new ones that were easy to program and they work fine. Is ther some place I can send the oder ones to to have them checked out and reparied?

I am unable to reprogram my 2 remotes and keypad after replacing the batteries in one of the remotes that stopped working. I have a Lift-Master 2000SDR. The remote was working before I replaced the batteries. After following your instructions, as well as the instructions in the User Manual and FAQ from LMaster online, I can only get 1 remote at a time to program. The learn button which says erase is orange.. I live in Mexico and bought the Merik here it is made by Chamberlain.
Here is the model # 511M-F52 The serial# 051413100082 after following instructions when I press the remote button the light above the Learn (erase)button flashes but does not open the door. Hope this helps

John..you may haver a bad remote or the logic board (computer) may be bad. The remote control that you need is a LM971 or the security plus chamberlain remote. Try to program one of those..If it wont learn either remotes..the logic board is bad and needs to be switched out. It could have gotten a power surge or lightening strike.
Update on my post. The remote that I thought just needed replacement battery was defective. Problem solved with the purchase of a new remote. Remote had a manufacturer date of 03/99, which is 11 years old.
Glad it worked out for ya. Sometimes its just a dead battery. And, i have put new batteries in to find that they were dead too. It can drive you crazy. :-)
I have Craftsman opener but only have one remote that works. However, I found another craftsman remote from my old house and it looks just like the one that works. Can I program my old remote from my old house to work with the new opener?

Scott if it is of the same frequency of your working remote, it will work on that machine. The remotes pretty much look the same but the frequency that they use is different from model to model. You can try it and see..worse that will happen is that it wont work. Let me know the color of your learn button and i can tell you which one will work with that machine....Joe

jbushko..does your Genie opener have a learn button on it, or dip switches like the remote has? If it has a learn button, a newer remote may work on it. If it has dip switches you will need to get another Genie dip switch remote.. Hope this helps...Joe
I have a Genie Chain Glide Garage door operator Series GCG & PCG that stopped working after a storm. I've tried unplugging it for a day, but this didn't help. Kenny..it sounds like lightening may have hit either the logic board,,or the motor starting capacitior. The starting capacitor is the cheapest thing to try first.. If it hit the board..it would be best to replace the entire machine if the machine is older than 5 or so yrs. Sorry for the bad news.

Troy..i hate to say this but, a lot of people have problems with the universal remotes. If i were you i would get another remote from craftsman or liftmaster. You need the 971LM, 972LM, or 973LM. The number after the nine means the number of buttons on the remote..i.e..a 972LM will operate two doors..Joe
Sweeps, We moved into a newer home and there is a liftmaster model 3255 opener there. we managed to re-program our old opener to match the unit and added a Klik2u remote. We can get the Klik2u to work but the car remotes stop working. When we got the car remotes to work again the Klik unit quits. Right now the klik unit opens the door using any button and the car units don't work at all. I've read every post here and am at my wits ends any suggestions would be helpful. The motor has a Purple button and the light on the back is amber, FWIW...doug

Doug..sorry i just saw this post.. You need to clear the board. Hold the purple button down for about 15 seconds. Then program the remote control to the machine..then program the remote to the car, and then program the car to the machine. The machine will only hold five programs, then will stop dropping one of the others..Let me know if you have problems...Joe

Hi Sweeps, I have a 1/2 HP Craftsman Garage Door opener and I was trying to program my remote control and my keypad. I started off my holding down the learn button to erase all the data. My remote started by working some times to not working at all. I tried following instructions by press & hold red button to clear and then pressing again while I'm holding down the remote button to reprogram. But when I do this the light does not go on and off but stays on for about 15 seconds. No matter how many time I try this its same way. I even tried unplugging from the outlet.
Does this mean the board is bad. I just want to cry because I can not afford a new one right now. Help? :(
Angela...check the battery in the remote and make sure it is good. If it is...you may want to try to program another remote. If another remote wont program to it you probably have a bad board. You can find the boards on ebay and can change them out yourself. It isnt hard..let me know if i can help..Joe
Sweeps, great info! Listen I just bought a brand new (Lowes) 1/2HP Chamberlain, purple learning button type. I have 3 older remotes: a Liftmaster Security+ (3 buttons), a single button Liftmaster, and a single button that only says Chamberlain. Scott...No sorry the security plus remotes will not work on the new machine..totally different frequencys. Save them for a friend that has a red learn button.
Joe, the only remote that says Security+ is the Liftmaster, the other 2 do not say Security+ at all, they only say Liftmaster OR Chamberlain

Scott..yea those are probably LM81, and they are different frequencys. Look on the back of the remote and it should tell you if the sticker is still on it. Good luck with it..Joe

I just bought a forclosed house with a marantec 4500 garage door opener, but the original remotes were not provided. I have found information about how to make the opener learn a new remote, but I can't seem to find anything about how to make the opener forget/delete the old remotes. I don;t want to think that somebody out there can get into my garage. Any ideas?
Hi Newhome..To erase the previos remotes go to the machine..you will see the lights in a round circle. There will be a button on there with the letter P on it. It means Program..hold that button down for about 15 seconds..this wil erase ALL remotes..then you can program your new remotes to the machine..let me know if you have questions..Joe
ust moved to a new home. I have a Chamberlain Security Plus opener with an old beat up Sears craftsman remote that works great. I purchased a brand new Chamberlain brand remote. Here is the issue. I can only get one of the remotes to program at any one time. I clear out the opener by holding down the red square button for 15 seconds. I then program either remote, works immediately. The second will not program. The strange thing is, either remote will work as long as it is the first one to ne programmed. I hope this makles sense. It is driving me crazy. I also could ont get my car remote to work either but I have not tried it first yet. Any suggestions? Anyway to completely reset the door opener. I tried to unplug, but it did not do anything either. Cager..it sounds like you have a bad logic board. When they start acting stupid like that, it is usually the problem. The ca remote has to be taught to the car, and then while you are pressing the built in remote in the car..someone has to push and release the red learn button. Hope this helps!
Hi Sweeps - what a knowledgable man about garage doors! Now i don't really have any specific information for you as i'm at work at the moment but we've just moved into a new house that has an electronic gate as well as garage door. We have one of the little blue remotes with the four buttons, one opens the gate and one opens the garage. We were only supplied with one remote tho and its one of the gates that you can't open/close unless you have a remote. Do you know if the process can be duplicated for a gate remote also? I don't need to be able to access the garage on the new remote as we only have one car and the garage isn't internal access, i just need to be able to get out the gate to go to work when my husband shuts it behind him when he leaves for work! Mel..if you get another remote..it will have to be programmed to the gate. There is a smart button for the gate too i am sure. Getting access to the learn button on the gate is the problem. You will have to check with the management to see if they will program another one for you. Some places are funny about allowing more than they give out for security reasons....Joe

Joe...if the remotes are working correctly, and the logic board is fine..you should be able to press and release the remote button, and the door should work. Also, the remote controls do have a 3 second response time. It usually can take up to three seconds for the signal to be received by the logic board. The logic borad may have taken an electrical spike from lightening or a power surge on the power line. This will affect the functions of the logic board and remotes. How old is the machine? If you are not sure..what color is the smart button on the logic board where the wires go into the machine. It should be a sqaure button..either green, orange, or purple...Joe

Andrew..does the door want to go down and then goes back up? Or, does it just click and the light bulb flash? If it does either of these..it is caused by the photo eyes that are at the bottom of the tracks on the door. They are not aligned. If they are aligned..both lights will be on..if one light is on..it means the other photo eye..is not lined up. You can loosen the little wing nut on the photo eye and move it around until they both are lit up. Hope this helps....Joe

Granny..follow the instructions to program your remotes to the car. Once the car accepts the code..you then need to teach the car to the machine. Have someone press and release the learn button on the machine and thenpress and hold the button on the car. You should see the lightbulb on the machine flash on then off. When it does flash on and then off it is programmed. The car manufacturers always leave this step out of the intstructions...hope this helps... Joe
Joe, I have read all of you previous posts and it sounds like my logic board might be going bad. I have an Aviator garage door opener and the learn button is orange. I have a 970LM keyfob remote and a keyless entry pad. I can get my receiver to learn 1 keyfob and the keyless entry pad, but it will not learn both keyfob. I have cleared the memory numerous times and it will work with either keyfob, but not both. Is my logic board going bad? Thank you.
Murfkins..yep sounds like it is going out on you. It should be able to hold a total of five remotes/keyless entries. You must have had an electrical spike at some time in the past....Joe

I can open/close my garage door using the door control push button located inside my garage. However both my remote controls keys does not work. I changed the batteries and tried to reprogram but the remote controls are not syncing up with the learn switch. I don't see the light flashing, it remains solid. What should I do?
Liftmaster..it sounds like you have the remotes locked out. Look on the wall switch in the garage. See if the light is flashing. If the light is flashing..hold down the lock button for about 10 seconds and release it. The light now should be solid. Your remotes should work after that.. Let me know...Joe
What is a lock switch? Is it located on the wall switch, remote key or main board where the learn switch is located?

Liftmaster..it is located on the wall switch. It wikk have three buttons on it. The big white button to open or close the door, and two others below it..one will have light on it, and the other will have lock on it.
My wall switch has only one switch. I tried the steps provided by you (for which I am very thankful), still my remotes keys are locked out.
Any more ideas how to unlock my garage remote keys.

Liftmaster..Let me contact the factory on monday and tell them what is going on. What color learn button do you have..orange or purple? I had this happen only one time before and i had to call the factory to get them to walk me thru it...It is something rare that happens to the programming...Joe

We recently purchased a third vehicle, I purchase a remote from Home depot and it programmed just fine. Only to find out now that keypad on the outside doesn't work and my huisbands remote doesn't work, When I reprogrammed his remote, now my remote wont work, the keypad still will not work... How many remotes can you have one a lifmaster. Our opener is about 15 yrs old..
Liftmaster..you will need a 971LM 972 LM or 973LM remote. Any of the three will work that machine
Judy.. A liftmaster will hold a total of 5 remotes/keyless entries. Clear the board, and start over...Hold down your learn button for about 15 seconds..then take a remote hold the button down on the remote, and press and release the learn buttton. Keep doing this for all remotes. For the keyless..make sure the 9 volt battery is good in it..then press and release the learn button..then enter the 4 digit code into the keyless entry and hold the enter button down...you will hear a click, and the the keyless should be programmed. Let me know if you have any problems..Joe
I have a Liftmaster older model garage door opener, it looks like from 1998. I would like to reset my keypad but don't know how. If I press the red button (only one button on this model and it is round and red) and then reset the 4-number code on the keypad and then press enter, will it also erase my remote openers? Right now both the keypad and remotes work great and I am afriad to mess with it but really need to reset the keypad. I would appreciate any help.
Kris..Yes you will have to erase the entire board to reset the keyless entry..it is easy tho...do this..press and hold down the red learn button for about 20 seconds...then get one of your remote controls..press and release (dont hold down) the red learn button, and then press the button you want programmed on the remote. You will hear a click and the light bulb should come on and go off...that remote is now programmed..then do the next remote the same way. To program the keyless..press and release the red learn button, and walk over to the keyless and enter your four digit code and hold the enter button down..you will again hear the click on the machine and the light bulb will come on and go off...yippee youre through. :-)...Hope this helps..Joe
How do you program the genie remote to a gate?
Reeses....you will have to find the learn button on the gate. It will be inside of the cover usually. Press and release the learn button while holding down the button on the remote. It is easy to do once you find the learn button on the machine. It may look like a little round button the size of a straw protruding about a quarter of an inch.

I have a Steel Craft Heavy Duty 1/2 hp door opener and my remote was stolen from my vehicle. I have unplugged the motor until I can get another remote.
It had a Model 61 remote, it was not labelled Model 61 LM.Are they the same remote? All I can find online is Model 61 LM remotes.
Forgot to mention it has a round/white button on the back of the motor, I think the remotes where DIP remotes but I can not see any switches on the back of the drive motor-just the white button and a red light- am I missing something?

I am hoping you've experienced this before: I press the learn button on my Liftmaster 1000sdr, but no indicator light comes on. The indicator light flashes when I enter the code on my new wireless keypad, and the garage door still opens with our two cars and our two remotes. When I press the learn button to try to reset all remotes, no light comes on then either.

Sue..i wouldnt worry about the light on the logic board flashing. As long as the machine is accepting the remotes and working properly..who cares! lol Seriously, if it works dont fix it.. A new logic board is around 85.00 or so plus installation..of course..i can walk you thru the installation :-)..Let me know if i can help ya...Joe

Thanks... but it won't take the new code for the wireless keypad and it won't remove the old codes from the remotes from the cars, either, so I'm guessing the learn button isn't working at all. In that case, is the only solution to replace the board?

Sue..yes looks like its time for new board..If the machine is 7 yrs or older..i would replace the entire machine. By the time you buy the board..89.95 or so, and have to pay to install it..you are over the cost of a new one....Joe

I have a Genie Intellicode about five years old. My remote got stolen so I bought a replacement remote. The new remote is a Skylink G5. I successfully programmed the new remote. However, now the other original remote does not work. Nor does the keypad (original). Advice?
Darren, it should work. Check the batteries in the keypad and remote..then retry to program them..if they dont work after that..i would say find another remote and try it. The keypads and remotes go bad after a while...Joe
Hi: I got 2 remote control openers and I did exactly what you are describing below with one remote:
"Ok, once cleared, you take each remote control, and go to the back of the opener where the learn button is. Hold the remote control button down, and push and release the learn button. You should hear a click, and the lights on the machine may come on for a split second. When this happens, the remote control is programmed. Continue this process until all remotes are programmed"
Problem is, after I program my second remote, the first one (already programmed) doesn't work anymore but the second one works. Basically, it is only letting me program one remote. It appears that the second remote overrides the first one. Thanks for any hints.
Felipe..if you have cleared the board and tried to reprogram your remotes..and it will only accept one or a few of the remotes..you have a bad logic board and it needs to be replaced.

Hi Sweeps...hoping you can help me out. I have a Marantec 4500 that is about 3 yrs old. I programmed my car's homelink when I first moved in and also had 2 remotes that worked. Around the same time, both remotes stopped opening the garage, but the homelink will still work. I tried new batteries and had a garage repairman come to the house and he was no help at all. Any ideas on how to tell if the remotes went bad? They both still light up when I press the button and I can't see both going bad at the same time. Can I program the remotes like with the Sears brands from the unit? Thanks in advance for any help.

Need to clarify, I have the mini 2 button remotes. When I press the smaller bottom button, the light is bright and stays on. When I press the larger top button (that previously opened the garage), the light flashes dimly and then does not stay on. It seems to me that I might need a new remote to program the unit and then transfer this code to the 2 old remotes and the car...but don't want to spend $30 on a remote if that isn't the answer.

Sam..the Marantec is a good machine..kinda aggravating to get parts for tho...It sounds like the remotes have gone bad..and when you get the new remotes..you will need to get a programing wire to program the two remotes. You can program one to the machine and then attach the connector to program the other..If you get the new remotes..lety me know..i can walk you thru it..it can be a pain the the buttocks lol...Joe
I'm going crazy I've followed your directions, the direction on the unit and directions on a Genie website. I'm trying to program a Liftmaster Professional Formula I with Geniw Intellicode remotes...am I doing something wrong or are these 2 not compatible?

I have a Craftsman garage door opener with 2 remotes (one in each car) and a keypad. One of the two remotes is a Skylink G5 however it recently stopped working. I have tried to change the battery however that made no difference.
If I hold the green 'learn' button on the Craftsman GDO, will I have to input a new code on my keypad and re-train other remote as well?
Also I'm not sure if the Craftsman 139.18876 model of GDO has a DIP switch. I can see the grey antenna cable, the white wires and the green learn button. I do not see a DIP switch anywhere however my Skylink G5 remote has the option to set it up manually. Do you know if that model GDO has a DIP switch and if so, where would I find it?

Mehr...If you press and release the green button it will not affect the other rmeotes..unless you have entered a total of five already. The learn button will accept the dip switch as long as you hold down the remote button and press and release the green learn button. If you hold the green button down..it erases ALL of the programs in the GDO. Hope this helps..Joe
We have two Lift Master professional openers, one a double car one a single car. We have the Cad EXT programed (3 button auto remote) to open/close either door correctly. We just figured out how to reprogram the clicker keyless entry correctly. One of our hand held remotes works fine to open and close the double door, and not the single, as we wanted, but the other hand held remote for 3rd car opens and closes both the double and single doors but not in unison...very frustrating! I want to reprogram hand held #2 to only open/close the double door, thus leaving no remote to open the single as it storage only. how do I do this with out clearing all of the other remotes that are working fine and fix only the one that opens both doors?

Cdantuono...Sorry, but you will have to erase all of the remotes from the machine and then program the remotes you want to work each door. I know its a pain, but,its the only way to do it.

We came to find it did work although we didn't have the remote. We just found the remote in the garage, changed the battery, used your site to program the remote and voila we have a working garage door opener and remote!!! We can't thank you enough!!!
I have a really ancient touch n go opener and it was working fine with two craftsmen remotes. Now I can only program each separately. the learn button is under the receiver cover and both remotes work. they simply erase the previous program unless there is a trick I am missing?
Charles..you need to clear the programs out of the machine. It will only accept 5 remotes and then it will start to drop the ones previously entered. Hold down the learn button for about 20 seconds and then wait a few seconds and then start to program the remotes back inot the machine..thea should fix you up...Joe
I have a liftmaster 41A3626 the remote only works from a few inches away. I know it isn't the antenna as our VW with homelink works fine. I need the remote to program our other car. I can get the remote to work at 3" away and the code is accepted by our new car but it will not open or close it, any ideas?
LLoyd.....have you taught the car to the machine? After you teach the remote to the car..you have to teach the car to the machine. Press and release the learn button on the machine while someone is pressing the homelink in the car..let me know if this works...Joe
I just bought a house with a Craftsman opener, but no remotes. The logic board has the square "learn" button and an orange/yellowish light. I've tried to program two universal remotes and one craftsman remote to work using your instructions, and the instructions in the package. Nada. Is it possible that the receiver goes bad? And if that's the case, is it just better to just replace the whole opener?
Eric..try to erase the machines programs. Hold down the orange learn button for about 15 seconds..then wait a few seconda and then try to program the remote control to the machine by pressing and releasing the learn button. The remote should be a 971LM remote. Try another remote before replacing the logic board. A logic borad is around 89.00 or so. If the machine is older it may be better to replace the entire machine..let me know..Joe

Thank you for the advice. Our Craftsman Residential Door Opener has 5 clickers programmed to it. The door opener is pretty new and was installed two years ago. I recently replaced the battery in one of the clickers, and now I have to program it to the gate.
Is it possible to program my remote control to the door opener, without having to completely erase/reset the codes for all five clickers? If I don't clear the device, and then go ahead and press the learn button to program my own clicker, will I risk "kicking off" one the current remote controls?
I just wanted to see because in my apartment complex, the five clickers belong to five different adults with different full-time jobs and so it would be a challenge to reprogram all of the remote controls at the same time. I'm trying to see if there is any easier way to get my clicker programmed to the door opener. Thank you!

Hello, Me and my hubby both spent about an hr. trying to program our brand new remote with no luck. We did the hold the learn button down till the light comes on then push the controller button down until the light flashes...Didn't work...so we did the clearing of the remotes to just start over and that didn't help,then I climbed into the attic-to un-plug it and it is hard wired into the house. We even put new batteries in the brand new remote....any other suggestions?(the remote that is mounted to the wall still works but the 2 smaller ones wont)
Dianna..press and release the learn button..DONT hold it down. If you hold the learn button in to long it erases the programs. The other thing is..the wall button you say works..is the light on the wall button flashing by chance? If it is..you have locked out the remotes even tho they may have been programed. To unlock the remotes if the light is flashing..is hold the lock button down a few seconds and release it..when the light goes solid (not blinking) it should work. If this isnt the case ..either the remotes are bad or the logic board needs replacing..let me know what its doing.. Joe
Joe the light is solid on the wall button. We were only holding the learn button down long enough to get the light to turn on.. just push then release. I'm afraid its the logic board UUGHHHH!!!!
Dianna..you dont need to wait for the light to come on..just press and release the learn button and the hold down the remote control button until you hear a click. Dont worry about the light coming on..it will program without the light coming on..Do you see a date on the machine? It should be on a sticker where the logic board is..it should have the model number on it and a MFGR date.

Dianna..that isnt a very old machine..Lift is 10 to 12 yrs old. So you still have few yrs on this one..if you can get it to accept the programs.

Found your site while trying to figure out what's going on with my GDO. Seems like you've got the best info out there!
I have a craftsman 1/2 HP GDO model 139.53910D with a logic board 41A5021-3H-315. It was installed 11/2005. The remotes stopped working overnight. The door control button works but is flashing green. It is a key entry and that also works. When I push the remote the light on the main unit flashes but fails to either open or close the door. It seems to me as if the unit is receiving the signal but failing to perform. Do you think reprogramming will work or does this sound like a logic board

Rob..your machine did not lose the programming..you have the remotes locked out. The light on the wall button should be solid and not flashing. To unlock the remotes..hold down the lock button on the wall button for a few seconds..and release it..it should be solid green..then the remotes will work. ....Joe

There is not a lock button on the wall mounted door control. It is only an illuminated doorbell type button. Is there another way the remotes could be locked out? Both of my hand held units and the unit built into my car fail to work. I tried holding the wall button for a few seconds but it only opens and closes the door and continues to flash rapidly. The light on the motor flashes twice when I try to use the remotes but does not operate the door. The instructions say the light flashing twice is indicative of a short or reversed black/white wires. The safety sensors are both glowing solid (one amber one green) so I don't think it's a short in the sensor wires. And it had been operating just fine for five years so I don't believe it's reversed wires.

Rob..I had that happen to me once before. If you dont have a lock button..i will have to call the factory and talk with a tech to tell me how to tell you how to correct the problem. If the green light is flashing..it has locked out the remotes. I will let you know something tomorrow..Joe

I have 2 Craftsman "EntryEase" Biometrics keypads, It says it is compatible with Remotes that have black buttons, and has a '315'(I am assuming that is the mhz) on the remote. you did mention in an earlier thread here that the Purple Learn/ Smart Button has a 413 mhz.
The EntryEase manual states that the remote is compatible to the '315' remote (black buttons), and powerheads/motors with a "Purple" learning/smart button...but that is 413 mhz, not '315'...confused...

daddee...You cant upgrade the system by replacing the logic board. Sometimes the machine and the logic board arent compatible. The frequency numbers you gave me doesnt do me much good. The logic boards have different frequencys on them. I need to know the color of the learn button on the original machine. As far as the marantec logic board..it will not work on the Liftmaster. I am not familiar with the easy entry keypads. I gues they program like the normal keypads. Let me know the color of your learn button and i will find out about the keypads for ya...Joe

The EntryEasy I have says Craftsman, but most of the ones I see in the 'net are Liftmaster (Division of Chamberlain); the same ones that make Craftsman-was that correctly assumed or am I misled.

Rob..i dont understand what you mean about unlock? If you mean the remotes dont work, and the wall button works..look on the wall button and see if you see a light flashing. If it is..hold down the lock button on the wall button for a few seconds and it will quit flashing..and the remotes will work then. Let me know if you need anything else..Joe

I am no dummy, but this thing is not responding to the normal procedure. I am buying a house with 2 circa 2001 1/2 hp GDOs. Current owner uses built in car remotes (prius and some other car). He gave me the original remotes, but they don't work. No problem, I have reprogrammed my liftmaster several times. These have the red buttons. First, let me say that I checked the batteries (3.25v by volt meter and correct orientation). I tried all options: 1. reset by holding button approx 20 then tried reprogram 2. press and hold remote button then press learn button 3. press and release learn button the press and hold remote button. In all cases, the yellow learn LED comes on solid, but never flashes - times out after about 30 sec. I believe the board to be good since it was working with car built in remotes (until I reset the unit). Any thoughts?
Gator...You may have some bad remotes..or the board may still be bad. Sometimes it will only alloow one or two remotes to be programmed.. That is a sign that it is going bad. It should allow you to program 5 remotes into the machine..Get a new 971LM remote and try to program it and see if it will work. Let me know what happens.. Joe

I have a craftsman model 139.53985D, but the remotes the landlord gave me are 139.53879. I tried the reset procedure (pressed the square purple learn button for 20-30 seconds then got the remote and pressed and released the learn button while holding the remote button. Nothing...replaced the battery, still nother. Are these remotes compatible with the unit? Everything else works, pad buttons and keyless entry pad...

Ash..That is an old machine. It sounds like the logic board is no good. You can get another logic board but, the cost is almost as much as a new machine.

Daddee..sorry man..i asked liftmaster today and they said that you must have a bad logic board. If you dont have a deluxe wall station..the logic board has gone bad. Sorry, they just back with me on this.
hey I have a new garage opener but lost the remotes its a Chamberlain 3112E it has a RED SQUARE BUTTON and a PURPLE WIRE ANTENNA....I went to eBay and bought 2 same remotes which are 956D/370Lm I tried to program it an nothing seems to work followed manual an remote instructions to no avail...so I went to eBay again and bought the 970Lm/356CB and still i tried it several ways an nothing please help !!!!

I have a Promax PMX75 opener. I think it is the original one from when the house was built in 1993. I do not see any learn button on the opener but I do see a set of dip switches. I purchased a new 2011 Camry and tried to use the remote to program the Homelink system in the car but it wouldn't work. Any ideas on what I can do? Thanks.

Joe, My do it security plus gdo button on the wall won't open the door. The button looks like a doorbell button with a wire that looks like speaker wire. the remote works fine. Thanks Marty

Marty ..sounds like the botton may be bad or a wire is off or broken. Taje the door bell button off of the wall, and touch the two wires together..the door should work...dont worry about getting shocked..its just 24 volts. If the door doesnt work, check the wires at the machine. Red striped wire goes on the screw to the far lefy and the white wire goes beside that. Let me know if you have problems after that.
Mike it should work. Sometimes they take several times to program. Unless the new cars homelink wont accept the older remote system. I dont think its a problem with the machine..it is the car not wanting to accept it
Moved into a house with an older Chamberlain Liftmaster opener, model 1160LMC manufactured in April 1993. While the previous owner left behind two original remotes (model 61), they were pretty banged up and only worked half the time. Ended up picking up a set of Chamberlain 750 single-button remotes off ebay. Tried setting up both remotes but can't get both to work at the same time. First I wanted to clear whatever codes existed for the previous remotes, so I pressed and held the yellow learn button on the opener for over 30 secs. Tested the old remotes and they no longer worked. Now time to activate the new remotes! I held down the button of one of the new remotes while pressing the learn button. Garage door opened and closed with the new remote perfectly. Then I tried activating the second new remote using the same method, and it worked as well. Then I tested new remote #1 again and it didn't work. I tried waiting 5 minutes between activating each remote and still the same problem. So while I was able to get each remote to work individually, I can't get them to work at the same time. I should also note that I have two wired button openers, one inside the house and one in the garage. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
rsquared..I know said you cleared the board..when programming the remote.just press and release the learn button..dont hold it down at all unless you are clearing the board. If it still will only take one remote..the logic board is bad..let me know if i can help..Joe
Sweeps Luck, yes, that's exactly how I programmed the new remotes, just pressed and released the learn button. I only held it down to clear the board. Signs pointing towards a bad logic board :(. I guess it wouldn't mean anything that the two older remotes were working, since they were probably programmed a long time ago?
Yea..it is better to buy a new machine...than replace the logic board.

I had to replace the logic board on a Craftsman 1/2 HP opener. The wall mount opener works, but I can not get the original remotes to reprogram?
I have 3 61ML remote controls, all of them working. Then I bought another one (Stinger, 61ML compatible). When I program the Stinger it cancels out the other three. When I reprogram any of the others, that cancels out the Stinger. The code bars of all 4 remotes are set identical. That happens even after I erase all previous codes from the opener.
How can I get all of them (not either -or) to work at the same time?

Hi Sweeps - excellent page here. You're a blessing to us all. I've a similar problem with my remote opening the door but NOT closing the door (Liftmaster Pro Whisper - year 2000). I just read through your advice and I'll try re-adjusting the photo eyes. Just to clarify, both eyes should have a light on? One is off and the other yellow at the moment. If repositioning doesn't work. Would you suggest putting up a new unit or purchasing new photo eyes?
I actually bought a Craftsman 3/4 Belt Drive two days ago because I thought the system was old and shot. Hopefully, I can return that if the eyes are in proper working position!
Angus, yes both eyes should be on. Try to adjust them again. I use a tape measure to measure off of the floor to the center of the lens, and then from the wall to the center of the lens..and then make the other eye the same dimension. If they are the same you have a bad set of eyes or, your logic board could be bad.

My question is about the keypad (KLIK2): can one key pad work for both (with 2 different PINs: one for the garage door and one for the gate), similar to the remote clicker. Thank you
Jim..You will have to clear the logic board..and reprogram all of your remotes. It is the only way to program a keyless entry and to be able to remove the old code from the keyless. Clear the board by holding the smart button down for about 15 seconds. Then press and release the learn button and enter the code into the keyless and press and hold down the enter button til you hear a click and the light on the opener flashes. It is now programmed. Then to program the remotes press and release the learn button on the opener while holding down the button on the remote control..wait for the click and the light flash.. then program the other remotes the same way..it will hold up to five total.
George..I am sorry i am not familiar with a stinger remote. I have found from my yrs of working with these machines..it is better to stick with original Mfgrs. remotes. The Klic2u remotes sometimes work and sometimes not..sorry i couldnt give you a better answer..Joe
Preet..it sounds like you may have a bad logic board. It should not be opening by itself. Try this..take the wires off of the door bell button. Sometimes the door bell button mounted on the wall will short out and cause all kinds of malfunctions. The wires are low voltage so dont worry about shocks :-) If this corrects the problems with it opeing randomly then just buy another door beel button at Lowes or Home Depot.. One for two.. Yes it should be able to program both the gate and the door. You will have to use a seperate number for each though.
Thank you for your quick response Sweeps Luck. After I programmed the keypad for the garage door, which worked great, however, when I next went on to program it for the gate, it reset the previous process I did for the garage. The programming process calls for pressing both the * and the # keys as the same time then onto step 2 etc. Is this step 1 the culprit ? If so, how do I get around it. Thnk you in advance.

I've been desperately searching for information on my fiancee's garage door opener and remotes. Your site seems to have ALL the answers so I thought that I would ask you.
Her opener is an older (10+) Sears model 139.186006. The remote that came with it doesn't work any longer. The contacts on the inside will not work and a remote control repair person said that it would be better to purchase a replacement rather than pay for the repair.
The opener does not have a 'learn' button; it has 8 dip switches. However, the new remote control does not have dip switches inside of it. So, I do not know how to tell each device about the other!

Mark..yea, you will have to get a remote control that has dip switches, and match them to the ones on the machine or vise versa..it will be a 61LM remote i think.. let me know if you have any questions.. Joe

Iust installed a new Chamberlain Belt Drive to replace my 12 year old model. You may have answered this question a million times already but how do I program my old Chamberlain remote to open the new door? Hi NC.. Sorry the old remotes will not work on the new machine. They are a totally different frequency. You will have to get another remote a 371, 372, or 373LM.

i have a genie pro and 2 separate garage doors. it works fine if i push the button to open it by the door. the remote isn't programmed. i can't get the learn indicator light to come on to program the remote. i've programed the right door, so i know how to do it, and on the left door i have tried unplugging the unit and plugging it back in, programming without the led light on (hoping it was just burned out) and nothing works. i'd really like a remote for that side of the garage. thanks for any help!
Diane..have you tried programming the remote that works on the other machine? The other remote may be bad. If the remote that works wont program to the other machine..it then means the logic board on the machine is bad. Hope i didnt confuse you. Let me know if you have any questions...Joe
yeah i tried that and it worked on the other door. but, i messed around with the left side some more and checked all the connections again and got it to work. now i've just got to adjust the tension on the door - but it's working now. thanks so much for your quick response!
I am trying to program a replacement remote. The opener is 20 years old. The brand name is Electronic Command. We purchased a universal remote control that looks identical to the last remote. I have read the directions and am clueless where to start. From the directions it looks like I have a dip switch. I am barely able to see something that looks like a code on the back of the machine. The directions do not tell me but am I suppose to open up the remote and match something up with the numbers on the motor? I am so confused.

Linda..take the cover off of the remote where the battery is stored. The dip switches for the remote are in the compartment. Match the ones on the machine to the ones on the remote.. Joe

Bern...No sorry they are different frequencies. O know they are 315mhz but, they usually wont work on other manufactures.
I have a chamberlain unit and a 373W remote with 4 doors. I lost one of the remotes. I have four others that I made sure the battery works, but I can't get them to program. I can take the remote that works and do the learn button and the bulb flashes and it connects the remote to the unit. But for all 4 of my other remotes, I get nothing. I tried erasing the codes and starting over and the one remote works and all others I get no connecting the remote to the unit. I have tried this on all 4 doors and no connection. SO the unit learn works (but only with one remote) the batteries are good, I can't believe that all 4 remotes would be bad. Any ideas?
Tom..It sounds like you either have bad remotes..or a bad logic board. Try to get a new remote, erase all of the codes, and then program the remote that you know for a fact works, then program the new one. If it will not program..your logic board has taken a power spike and needs to be replaced. Let me know if the new remote works it...Joe
I will buy a new remote today. I just have trouble thinking that all 4 remotes went bad and all 4 openers have a bad logic board when I do have one remote that will open any door and until last week when I lost the other remote we used everyday, then I had 2 remotes that would open any door.
Tom.. I agree with you on the remotes. The remote sells for around 35.00 whereas a logic board can be 85.-- to 130.00 depending on the model of machine.. Let me know how it turns out.
Hi, i have a Liftmaster 1215EM FS2, i'm trying to program a 970LM remote. The instructions read: "Press and release the learn button(red in my case) on th emotor unit. The learn indicator light will glow steadily for 30 seconds" the pres de remote etc... but when i do this the yellow light dosen't glow steadil. I tried pessing the remote control's botton and then, pres the "learn" but no click sound. I have no lighted door control nor multi-funtion door control, just two hand-held that came with it.
Daniel..Do this first...press the red button down for about 15 to 20 seconds..then release it. Take one of the remote controls and hold the button on the remote down..then press and release the red button..you should hear a click on the machine, and the lightbulb on the machine should come on and go right off..when it does this it is programed. Do the same with the other remote. If you dont hear a click when you press and release the red button..check the batteries in the remotes. I have gotten dead batteries with brand new remotes before. Also i have gotten bad remotes straight out of the box..hope this helps.. Joe
I got the new remote fresh batteries, and i think it works because when i press it, the indicator light on the motor shows some activity, what i think the problem may be, is that, it already has all the controls the motor it can handle. I'm afraid to erase the motor's memory, because I do have 2 working controls(that came with the motor), and don't want to loose them in case the "learn" thing doesn't work. Any advice? or should I go for it? And the fact, that when I press and release the learn botton on the motor the indicator light doesn't stay on (only when I'm pressing it) should worry me?
Daniel..Your machine will only hold 5 remotes or keypad entries..after 5..the machine will start to drop some of the remotes programmed. It is easy to program again. Just follow the instructions on the previous email i sent to you. You should be able to install five into the machine unless there is a problem with the logic board.
You are the best!!! After fighting with the remote for 2 hours, following the instructions that it came with...I nearly threw the thing away. But I found your site, and tried it. Lisa..The remote has to be accepted by the car. Follow the instructions from the car manufacturer, and once the car has accepted your remote, then you program the car to the machine. To do this press and release the learn button on the garage door opener and then have someone press and hold the button in the car...the lightbulbs on the machine will flash on and off once it has been accepted..you may have to do this a couple of times..Joe

Our complex has a Ramset sliding gate. My roommate uses a Clicker remote to open it. I bought the same one (KLIK1U), set the dip switches properly, but can't find any info on how to program the Ramset brand.
The instructions give details for Genie, Chamberlain, etc, but I can't find anything on how many times to press the programming button for the Ramset. I've searched online to no avail... Any ideas? Thanks.
CZ..you may have to get into the gate opener to program the remote.Sometimes the learn button is inside of the gate opener. You may need to take the remote to the maintenance person to be able to program the remote.

Paris..if the learn buttons are different colors, they will not work..In other words a red button logic board keypad will not work on a logic board that has a purple button. Check that and see and get back with me.

Daizy..how many remotes/keypads do u have programmed to the machine? It will only hold a total of five, after that it starts to drop some of the others.

Ive only got the one programmed to it. When I programmed that first one, I followed your steps to reset it because the previous owner took the remotes with him. So just the one. The one that I am trying to program to it now would be 2.

Kim ,,,You will have to find out how to program the remote to the car. Then once the car has accepted the remote..you then have to press and release the learn button on the machine, and hoave someone press the button on the car. This teaches the car to the machine.

Hi, I have an old Chamberlain Garage Door opener that I need another remote for. Opener doesn't have a learn button. The reciever has 10 dip switches and I have an old Chamberlain remote with 12 dip switches that works. I have tried the LM 61 and the LM 375 universal remotes and neither worked. Any ideas?
Chris, the 61LM should work the machine. Make sure that the dip switches on the machine and the remote should match. If they match there may be a problem with your logic board.
i dropped my lift master remote in the snow...model 971lm...now remote not working...should i try changing battery or is remote history?????
Terry, open the remote up like you are going to change the battery. Let it sit for a while or take a hair dryer to it and get all of the water out of it. Then try a new battery and see if it will prgram to the opener. If it does not, then you will have to get a new remote. It may be ok after it drys out.

Hi. I am having problems again with my two openers and getting them programmed to the opener buttons on my GM pickup. They both worked fine until last week and I cannot get them to work again. I am relatively sure that in trying to re-program the main garage, I messed up the second garage code.....as it worked until I had the problems with the main garage.
I have two openers:
1) Main garage is a Litmaster Professional Line Formula One Whisper Drive - dated 08/1993
2) the second garage has a Chamberlain Liftmaster The Professional Line 1/2 HP - dated 01/2004
I have a remote that works for the main opener #1 above. I had the problem before of my buttons in my GM truck quit working. I found somewhere that you could program the vehicle by using an already programmed remote, but I cannot find the information now. Can you tell me how to program my truck buttons using an already programmed and working remote?

Greg..you should erase the boards on the machines. To do that, push down and hold the sqaure learn button for about 20 seconds. This erases all programs. You will have to find out how to program the remote to the vehicle. Once the vehicle has accepted the code..all you have to do is have someone press and release the learn button, while someone is holding down the button on the vehicles Homelink system. I am sorry i cant tell you how to program the remote to the car, as each vehicle manufacture is different. Let me know if you have problems... Joe
Thanks Joe. I managed to find out how to program the Homelink on my GM truck using the already working remote. You hold the button down on the remote at the same time you hold down the button on the remote. It will start flashing slow; then when the Homelink starts flashing faster, you let off on both buttons and wait for the Homelink to shut off.......then the Homelink is programmed.

My remote will open the garage door but it won't close the door. When I try to close it, the light just flashes on and off several times. Any suggestions on how to fix this?
I did all of the steps and still my remote would not work. I discovered the cause to be an LED strip light (think under cabinet) plugged into the same outlet that was interfering with the signal. I unplugged the LED strip and now the remote works great!
Kate..the problem is the photo eyes at the bottom of the door. There is something in the path of the beam, or they have been bumped. There should be a green light on one and a yellowish light on the other. If they are both aligned..both light will be on. If only one light is on, move the other light a little until you see that light come on. Let me know if that doesnt work...Joe

Hi, I worked on my friend's remote for his gate (Super 500 G8Z gatez motor). Installed a new transmitter, now the neighbours are controlling their gate. I would like to cancel all the programmes for the remotes and reprogramme them again exclusively for their remotes only, how do I go about this? Benzo..you will have to find the learn button on the gate operator, and press and hold the button down for about 20 seconds. Then to reprogram your remote you will have to press and release the learn button while holding down the remote button. I have two garage doors, one opens with a Marantec M4700e and the other with a Chamberlain. I am trying to create one remote that opens both doors. I have the Marantec two button remote and cant figure out how to get it to learn the Chamberlain door, and bought a Clicker that quickly paired with the Chamberlain door, but won't work with the Marantec. Any suggestions or is the Marantec somehow the problem (ie can only use their remotes with their doors). Thanks
Dave.. I have found that the universal clickers will work, and sometimes will not. The frequency of each opener manufacturer is different. It could be the frequency is so different it wont accept it.

Hi Sweeps! I recently purchased a Genie (model 2022) garage door opener. After installing it, I tried to program the switch on one our vehicle's rearview mirrors to open the door and was successful, only to find out that the two remotes that came with the unit no longer worked. I tried to reprogram the units back to the remotes but could only get the unit to work with a single remote at any one time (they would each work when programmed individually, only to have the other one not work anymore) At this point I would be happy just to have the two remotes working at the same time like they were when I bought the unit. Any suggestions? Your expertise is greatly appreciated.
Ethan..when a machine will only accept one remote..it is usually the logic board (brain) of the machine. I have gotten Genie machines. straight out of the box and they would not work. If you have the reciept, take it back. Maybe the next one will work. I have found out over the yrs that i have had a lot of problems with Genies. I usually use Chamberlains, Craftsman, as these pearts are easily interchanged in the machines. They are such a pain, that i usually charge more to install them. I stayed on the phone for 40 mins last week with their tech advice only to find out that after i did all of the troubleshooting..i had bad logic boards. I had already hung the machines and had to take them down an box them back up. The customer wasnt happy. I told him to go buy chamberlains, and i would reistall them at the same cost. The bad thing is..i had warned him about the Genies before he bought them. Not trying to bad mouth a commpany, just explaining what prtoblems i have seen with them over 25 yrs or so....Joe

Hi Joe - it is clear you have helped many people with garage door opener problems! I just moved into a house with a very old Steel Craft GDO. It had 1 working remote. I bought a KLIK1C universal remote and was able to program it thru use of the yellow learn button on the GDO receiver. However, now the car remote for unlocking the car doors triggers the GDO and apparently some other device does so as well (the garage door is often found open). Pushing the yellow button for 6 seconds (or for a minute) does not clear the codes. Do you have any suggestions? Many thanks!
Marc..i am not a fan of the klik remotes..They are usually more trouble than not. If you hold the learn button down for about 15 seconds..it will erase all codes. Try to reprogram and see if the machine will accept it. Sometimes they will sometimes they wont.
Hi Joe - Thank you for the lightning-fast response. I held the learn button down for 15 seconds and the car remote continues to trigger it. The KLIK also continues to trigger it. I repeated this for, holding down for 20 with the same result. Same thing for 25 seconds. The unit certainly resists being erased.
Late yesterday, after realizing multiple devices open the garage door, I unplugged the unit for a while. I even completely removed the receiver (disconnecting the wire harness and 4 bell wires), it still remembers the codes. Is there a battery hidden in it somewhere?
I don't mind if I have to give up on the KLIK. Most important right now is to stop the door from opening from other devices.

Marc.. Ok, that tells me something. You have a bad logic board. That is also the reason why the klik remote will not work. The logic board is the brain of the machine. You can find one for about 89.00 or so online, or i can get one for you. But, by the time you pay for the logic board, and the pain to install it, and reprogramming..there still may be another problem. I would suggest buying a new machine. Lowes and Home depot carry the chamberlain brand machines. Hate to break the bad news to ya. If the logic board is bad..it will do ALL kinds of crazy crap. lol Let me know if i can help... Joe
Hi Joe - actually the KLIK remote does work, but that is not important now. It is intriguing that the codes cannot be cleared despite my attempts to de-energize the receiver. Is there any other way to force the unit to loose the codes?

I recently purchased a universal Clicker garage door remote. I changed the dip switches on my old Sears Craftsman 1/2 HP garage door opener to match the dip switches on my old sears remote and I made sure my new universal clicker remote was the same on the positions of the dip switches as well.
My old sears remote works like a charm. Opens and closes my garage door. During the process when I'm programming the new universal remote, I press the putton inside by the battery that lights up the led, I then press the number of times it says to match up with the type of garage door opener. When I press the button about eleven times, it opens the garage door. I press the button that keeps the program in my remote, but then press the button that opened my garage door to close it, but it won't close my garage door.
Not sure what to do. Everytime when I get to the point of pressing the button, it opens the garage door, but won't close it. My old remote opens and closes it no matter how I position the dip switches just as long as they are on + or - and not on zero. Your thoughts?

Mike..i am not sure on that one. Usually if the dip switches on the machine and remote match up..they will work. If not there is usually a problem with the logic board. Try to change the dip switches to another code and see if it will accept it then.

hello i just have we have a problem with our liftmaster garage door i was reding ur programing if i understood correct i can only program 5 controls what will happen if i need more 11 to be programed. we are able to program the controls but they stop working the next day the disprogram... is that because were programing more controls than the machine can take...

We just installed the liftmaster keyless entry pad on the garage and now the car remotes wont work - I dont know what to do to fix them - should i call the tech to come look at it or are the steps above the same on the car remotes. Will i have to then reprogram the keyless entry pad?
Deirde..Erase the board..Press and hold dowm the learn button on the mschine for about 20 seconds..then takeeach remote and press and release the learn button on the machine..while holding down the button on the remote..you will hear a click on the machine..it is programed..do the same to the other remote...now to program the keyless..press and release the learn button, then walk to the keyless..entery the four digit number into the keyless and hold the enter button down to you hear a click. Well, I finally got around to picking up a 61LM remote and tried to get it to work. Once I looked at the DIN switches in the remote, there were 9 of them. However, the opener's motor only has 8. I set the 1st 8 switches on the remote to match those of the opener but nothing worked.
Do I have to pick up a remote that only has 8 switches? Or, is there some way to configure the one that I have now?
If a new remote is required, would you happen to know, from your vast knowledge (not joking!!!!), what that would be?

Follow-up to my comment three weeks ago ... I got a hold of the Genie people to see if they could remedy the situation or pay to send someone out to uninstall the unit. They actually told me how to fix it so I thought I would let you know in case anyone else asks. When you push the "learn' button down and hold it, it actually clears the memory completely, making it seem like only one signal is accepted at a time. If you just tap the button, the unit accepts and additonal signal without erasing the prior one. You would think they would differentiate between the two in the instructions. Thanks for your help!
Mark..set the dip switches like the one that you have..for the 9th dip switch set it to the middle position..it should work then..it set it to use only 8 of the switches instead of 9..hope this does it for you....joe

I tried that on my first attempt and tried it again but to no avail.
I also tried changing the switches to a new configuration while keeping the 9th switch in the middle '0' position but that didn't work either.
I don't know if it makes a difference, but the panel with the switches on the motor is stamped 'AMP' while the transmitter has 'ETD'.
I'm guessing, at this stage, that I'm just plain out of luck and I'll have to get a new motor to replace what's currently in place IF I want to use a remote.

I have a liftmaster Professional 1/3 HP GDO with two 971LM remotes. The control board model is 41A5021-1D. Two weeks ago, one of the remote quit. I tried to reset the remote but found that I could only set up either one of the remotes but not both of them.
After reading the forum, I believed the logic board was bad. I ordered new logic boards. However, I tried two new boards but none of them worked. After I erased all passcodes, I could enter the first remote. However, when I tried to enter the second remote, all three logic boards failed to learn the second one.
What happened is when I pressed the red button for the second remote, instead of blinking twice and accepting it, the amber light stayed on for 30 seconds and nothing happened. Is there something else I should do?
I checked the batteries of the remotes and they were good. I replaced batteries but still did not work. Could the remote controls are the problems? Should I buy new remotes?

Janet..you will have to take the remotes to the gate, and find the learn button on the gate to program the remotes. Push and release the learn button while holding down the remote controls button. Do the same with the other remote. You may have to get the maintenace man to gain access to the learn button. Hope this helps.

I have programmed remotes and homelink buttons for my chamberlain whisper drive and theywill only open the door, not close it. The only way to close it is the wall mounted switch. There is nothing obstructing the sensors. Any idea?

Geoff..Yes either you have something blocking the photo eyes, or, you dont have them aligned. Look at them..one should have a light on..its the sending eye..if the other one is off..it needs to be movoed around a little til the light comes on too. Then the door will go down..let me know if u have problems...Joe
Joe, my problems are never that easy!
I checked again, And the sensors are aligned and the green light is lit in the far sensor and I can make it go out waving my hand in front of it.
The other reason I don't think that is it is because the unit will blink the lights if it is told to close and there is an obstruction and this is not happening here.
It Is as if thecontrols are only somehow programmed to open but not close.
Again, all remotes (keypad, homelink visor, own remote) can open the door butnot close it. Only the wired wall button will close.
This phenomenononly started after programming my newest homelink visor.
Appreciate any further theories.
Geoff..ok..you told me the problem..now that you have both lights on...i know u are gonna think im nuts..get down and look very closely..the light that goes out when you block the beam..will be flickering very very slightly..you will have to look hard to see it..move that eye just a little so that it doesnt go out and re-tigten the wingnut.. It is making enough contact to make the light come on, but not good enough to stop the reversing system. Move the light and try the remote..it should work.

The light in the sensor never flickers. It's on or off. I adjusted it several times to try anyway, but it did not change the behavior.
Last night I was able to get the keypad to open and close the door, along with one of the cars.
However this morning only the keypad worked. The car did not. It would not even open the door this time.
The garage door unit will flash the overhead lights if there were an obstruction. And they do not blink. It just doesn't close.
Also this phenomenon started when I programmed the new car. I didn't accidentally hit the sensors or anything. So u continue to think it's a programming problem , but I'll keep trying what you suggest because I'm out of ideas and you have a 3 year track record of good ones!

Geoff..that being the case. You have a bad logic board..it may have been hit by lightening, or had a power surge. You can find them online for sale or i can get you one..sorry i thought it would be a simple fix.

It was led bulbs that I put in the opener, but just not any led bulbs, bright, nourish 8000k led bulbs.
That's why they would open but not close. Approaching the house, the lights were off. No interference. When I was in the garage, lights were on. Interference.
Curious and not wanting to go back to money eating invandescents, I put amber 3000k led lights in, and everything works fine.

Geoff, Great..i failed to ask you if it was not working in the afternoon, or early morning. That could have given us a clue. If the sun is shining on the receiving eye just right usually early morning or late afternoon..the opener will not work..but, will work fine during mid day. Hi, we bought a KLICK2U today because an old roommate lost the original remote. The opener is a very old Stanley model #2563-03 I believe. We cannot find a "learn" button, or dip switch anywhere on or around the unit. Any suggestions?

I have a three-button liftmaster remote. It was left out in the rain, but I used it after that and it worked. Then I tried to program my built-in car opener with it. Since then it hasn't worked. I tried to use the learn button. I followed the direction on the garage door opener to erase all codes and then tried to re-program the remote and it still doesn't work. Do you have any ideas on what the problem could be? Is it the rain or something with trying to program it to my car?
Mswj4..Hold down the learn button for about 20 seconds..this will clear the board...thentake the remote control hold down the button on the remote, and prtess and release the learn button..if the machine does not accept the program..you will need to buy another remote control..if it does accept it..you may have to try several times to get the car programmed...after the car is programmed..hold down the cars remote button and press and release the learn button.
Hi, we have a LiftMaster garage door opener. A few months ago, my mom lost one of the remotes. So I went to the store and bought the same kind(Security Plus). After clearing the codes, I am only able to get one remote working at a time. The second remote cannot be programed to work. No matter what I did, only one of the remotes works. I even tried to switch the order of which remotes gets programmed first. However, after programming the first one, the second one is not accepted by the garage door opener. After reading your blog, I figured the logic board is bad. I replaced it and it's still doing the same thing. Only one remote would work at a time. Can you please help me? Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Jack, ive never had that problem..i will have to contact tech at Chamberlain, and see what they say about it. It usally works after you replace the board. I hope you didnt get a bad board..i have replaced a board only to find out the new board was bad too. I will get back with ya..Joe

Genie ISD995. Remotes suddenly ceased to work unless standing close to garage door or inside garage. Keypad works only when garage door is open. Changed batteries. Same thing. Reprogrammed. Same thing. Bought new remotes. Same thing. Returned new remotes. Genie says I need a new board (either internal or external should be okay, they say). Board is covered by lifetime warranty, but they won't honor because I'm not original owner & don't have receipt. Anyway, what should I do? I'll buy a new internal board if that'll REALLY solve the problem. Any advice? Thanks!!!
Elle...it is a board that is the problem. I was unaware that a Genie had two boards. I usually dont mess with genies due to the fact that they are hard to work with. I have taken brand new Genies out of the box only to find that they had bad boards. I do NOT even install them any more. I use Liftmaster, Chamberlain,Craftsman..they all are made by the Chamberlain Corp. and are easy to work on, and 90% of the Door Companys in the U.S. carry parts and can fix them. Wow! Thanks for answering about my ISD995 board problem. Didn't mention this originally, but a Genie person told me on phone that it could possibly be due to interference w/signal due to either military testing in the area and/or neighbors with new wireless technology that interferes with the frequency. They suggest buying a black box from Home Depot that operates at both 390 and a higher frequency, and which also contains a board. That's why I said 'internal or external'. Like, I can buy a new board from Genie, or go to HD and buy the box. The box would solve a frequency and/or board problem, but a new board alone won't solve a frequency problem. They also say that if it's a frequency problem, it may clear up on its own when the source of interference is gone, in which case we just operate it manually for awhile and try the remotes again later. I hope I'm making sense trying to explain something I barely understand! What do you think about all of this? What a pain, anyway.

We went ahead and bought the little black box from the 'Po, because it may be the quickest solution. It was $56.95 plus tax. I'll let you know the outcome. Thank you for the info on the Chamberlain. Ive got a brand new Craftsman opener with the purple learn button (315mhz). I just bought a new keypad for it and it still wont program. I only have one remote and the homelink in the car programme to it. I dont have the wired wall remote though. Do I need that for the keypad to work?
Hi Eddie..no, you dont need a wall button to program the keypad. Just follow the innstructions on the keypad and then press and release the purple learn button, and then push the four digit code into your keypad and hold down the enter button until the lightbulb on the maachine flashes. Sweeps, read most of your post, great response. I have a liftmaster with a gray button, that shorted out(quit working). Bought another board off of EBay, installed and works with the hardwired push button. Can not get the remotes to program. Have a car remote, 61lm and a wall mount keypad. None of them with program. I can hold down the smart button on back of motor control for minutes and the led will not flash. Push smart button while pushing the remotes and still no flash. push smart button and release then push remotes, still no flash on led. Any ideas, other than another board.

Sweeps, no I don't work at Oconee. Work for Michelin. The button is yellow on the one I got off EBay.

Eddie..the keypad need is the 376LM..but if you get it at Lowes..it will have a little design on ot the looks like this (*) The security plus keypad will not work on that machine. Differnet frequency.

I have a another clicker that I use to open the gate and I also have some codes that look like this (G20103271 / 011-53271) Is there any way to use these to program the new clicker or do I need access inside the gate housing to do this?

I'll start by saying it's guys like U that will always keep the wheels turning, Thx in advance.
Here's the issue, I have a lift master security,wanted to surprise my wife with a new 3 buttn key chain remote.
I had 4 controls working perfct, when I tried to program the new one,I accidentally erased all the codes, the gdo has a Red,Square,button which says erase.
If I press the erease for 10 seconds a light "amber in color" turns on @ first, then turns off,then blinks about 3 to 4 times and remains off, assuming this means All erased, I then bring the remote close to the dgo as per instructions,very close to the red erase button near the antt, and I press the bigger button of all 3 (which I understand is the main)the amber light starts to blick showing it's receiving the signal so I press and release the red button on the gdo while keeping pressed the "main" on the remote, nothing happens, I follow the same procedure, several times,"without erasing proced" and nothing, if I keep the remote button pressed and the square red button pressed @ the same time , after a few seconds the gdo will click noise and light flicker once, and immediatley will do the same click noise and flicker light 3 times more, then gdo light stays on, and I'm back in need of Karate Kick fixing technique,please Help.....

I have tried all the tactics I could find all over online. I have 2 remotes one stopped working when I washed it. Also I have 2 brand new remotes. All are 64LM remotes. I can not get the new remotes to program at all. I did set the 9 dip switches. On my 2 existing remotes, I did get the washed one to program again. However no mater what procedure I try I can only get one remote to program to the door. I wiped the opener clean by pressing button for 6 seconds. All remotes were cleared. I then held transmitter, saw led in opener blinking, hit learn button for 1 second. That one works. When I add the second remote in the same way door open or door closed it will erase the first remote. So no mater what the only remote that works is the last one programed. I have 2 doors and it is the same on both. I am at the point of purchasing new units. These are a little older but I believe they are more current than the 1997 that everyone refers to.
Jason, i hate to say this but you have a bad logic board. If you replace the board you are about half of the cost of a new machine...You should just replace the unit. Sorry but oneremote is all you will get it to program..Joe

We have just moved into our new house and only recieved on remote for our lift master unit. After following the steps on the net I purchased the 971LM due to the fact that I had RED programming button on the unit, in saying that the original remote was a 81LM (according to the sticker on the back) I am now having difficulties programming both remotes, I can get them to work one at a time but not together, is this a frequency issue? should I have both remotes with the same model number? I think it was strange that the 81LM was able to work with the red programming button, where the remote should be for the green button.
Micheal..Yes the 971lm is for the red smart button. Im surprised the 61lm is working at all on that machine. If you have problems programming both the 971lms..you have a problem with the logic board.....Joe
Joe - should i return the 971LM and purchas another 81LM so they are both workning the freq? is there any smart learning remotes on the market that are universal to all modules? we are only renting the property and don't wish to spend to much in order to have two remotes,logic board sounds expensive.

Micheal if the smart button is red..you need to use the 971,,,if its green..you use the 81lm..a new logic board is about 90.00..so a remote is a cheaper fix..hope this helps..Joe

I have an old Sears Craftsman 1/2 horse opener. It has a purple learn button, with a yellow light that comes on when you push the learn button. I have a gray craftsman 315 controller, with one black button. I tried to push the learn button for 20 seconds to clear, then push my black button and the learn button again. San Antonio... to program the keypad.. press and release the square leanr button on your machine..then walk over to the keypad push the 4 digit number you want and press and hold the enter button on the kepyad..you will see the light bulb on the machine turn on and then go off,,,its done!

San Antonio...you have the latest frequency logic board available. The remote yon need is the 371LM. I think the remote you are using now is for the red button logic board..Im not familiar with craftsman codes. Check with a sears close by..sorry

Desperate..try unplugging the machine..wait about 15 seconds and then plug it back in. Erase the board again, and try to reprogram..if it wont accept the remotes...you have a bad logic board..maybe a power surge or lightening strike

Steve it will be on the machine where all of the wires are coming in..look at the picture at the top here and the learn button is the red square button..what kind of machine do you have?
Hi, First off thank you for this site, you are very kind. I have Overhead Door Legacy garage door opener and a remote that doesn't say what brand it is. I followed your instructions and held the button in on the remote, it only stayed lit for about 10 seconds while it was blinking I hit the learn button on the Legacy and it blinked for about 25 seconds but nothing. Any suggestions?

I hav the liftmaster (chamberlain) professiona 41A5021-1H-315 and i cant use it anymore.
First it will just have clicking noise and u will see only 5 flashing lights, then the holder for the garage door hit the bolt that stopping it. Its so tight and i cant move it or do anything.
What im doing now is just manually lower garage door.
What do you think is the problem and how can i repair it?

Cliff..you will have to loosen the chain on the machine. Where you loosen the chain in on the traveler..where the red release cord is. Once you loosen the chain a little..take the bolt out of the rail that the traveler is jammed against. Now, before you turn the machine back on..turn your up limit screw to open less. Id say turn it at least a full turn..thentighten the chain back up put the bolt back in and then reset your limits. If it continues to hit the stop bolt..you either have a problem with the limit assembly r logic board..check the limit assembly first tho..hope this helps..Joe
Hi, i have 3 garage doors. My garage remotes and keypad (craftsman) stopped working out of the blue. I hit the learn button on the first two doors and somehow programmed all the remotes to open both doors at once. HOw do i get them to open each one separately (one remote for one door). all the remotes open two doors at once. It is very frustrating. i tried your advice about resetting and pressing the learn button and remote button but they continue to open and close both doors together. What can i do?
Viral..you need to erase all of the doors and start over..Go to each machine and hold the learn button in about 15 seconds..then release the learn button and pick up the remote you want to program to the door. Press and relase the learn button, and then press and hold the remote button down until you hear a click..its programmed..do the rest the same way.. Let me know if you have problems....Joe
Hi, I have two Chamberlain Liftmaster Professionals. I have not used the remotes in a few years. I just replaced the batteries in each (3) remotes and cleared all old remotes. I followed the instructions to reprogram the remotes. When I press the buttons on the remotes , the program light next to the learn button blinks indicating it is receiving a signal (I think) but the door is not opening. They only open and close with the wall mounted switches. Any idea what is wrong?
One more fact, both units react the same way with different remotes which leads me to believe that they are not broken, but perhaps there is some "remote override" switch or that I am not doing something right. Thank you for any help.

Don..this may work or may not..unplug the machine for a few minutes..then plug it back in and clear the machine and then try to reprogram the remotes..if it wont accept them after this..the logic board is bad
Mig..look to see if the wall button is flashing..if it is..it is in vacation mode..or locked out..if the wall button is flashing the remotes will not work. Let me know..Joe
The remote was for another garage door opener I don't think I will be able to get it to work, its an RCS 318T and the garage opener is an Overhead Door Legacy. I will have to just go purchase a new remote.

Hi, I have the craftsman 315 remote. It is very finicky now and the open/close button can take several minutes to get the door to open. My wife's remote works fine. I replaced my battery with a new one, but the problem did not get better. Any ideas?
I have a old craftsman garage door opener (circa 1983). It works with the keypad that is screwed into the garage wall but I lost the remotes ages ago. Someone gave me 2 craftsman remotes from the same time period. I opened one of the remotes and it has the dip switches so I thought I just had to open the stationary keypad and match the remote switches to what was inside. Now...bear in mind I have NO idea of what I'm doing beyond that! I unscrewed the cover of the box on the wall (yes I disconnected the power) and I can see the circuit board but no dip switches. I don't want to break it so rather than do anything further I decided to google. Can you steer me in the right direction? Awesome thread here btw. thx!
Brenda..if your machine has dip switches..they will be on the motor on the ceiling. Look at the machine and where you see the wires coming into it..look and see if you see dip switches or a learn button...let me know and i can help ya..Joe
OK....in the light of day, I looked at the machine and see that there is a yellow learn button. I held it down for 20 secs and heard a click. I then pressed the button on the remote and held it down while I pushed and released the learn button. If I've done all that correctly then I am going to assume that the remotes don't work on my opener. As I said....they were freebies so it was a shot in the dark! Let me know if I've done anything incorrectly otherwise I guess I'll have to see if I can find a compatible remote for my opener. I don't see the model number on the opener but it is 1/2 HP and the model# on the back for the circuit board is 41A3493-1. Do you know if it's possible to still get compatible remotes for such an old model? I'm selling the house which is why I want to get at least one remote but don't want to invest in a new opener! thx again!

Alexis..some of them work and some dont..i personally dont suggest people getting them..what color is your learn button, and i will let you know which remote you can use
we have no learn button. There is only a dipswitch in the receiver and not the motor.
Alexis...you will need to get a 61LM remote..which is a dipswitch remote..take the back of the remote off where the battery goes, and you will see the dipswitches..match the dipswithes on the reeiver and it should work for ya

I have the Liftmaster 1265 security+ unit on my rental. Only 1 (of the original 2) remote works, I reset the unit and also can't program the renter's new Jeep to the working remote. Reading the many posts above implies the control board is bad, time for a new one.
But my question is the working remote previously would stop the garage door from opening/closing if I pressed the remote button again, now I have to wait for it to fully open/close before changing the direction.
Is this another symptom of a failing control board?
Yes, the hard-wired unit works normally to change direction.

Hi, this past Sunday neither my 4 neighbors nor myself could open nor close our liftmaster 3245 with our remotes. The only way we could open them was through the standard wall remote. I tried resetting the remotes through the learn button and follow the proper steps and nothing. The following day, the neighbors found their remotes to be working again... Well, i guess that since i had ried to reset mine, they weren't. So i did reset them both and it worked fine. But now, i have to get right nder the motor to either open or close the garage, they won't work at a distance anymore. I tried resetting them and they still won't work at a distance...
